2024 Lugazi Open: Akena in 4 shot lead after opening round | Amateurs

Joseph Reagan Akena established a 4-shot lead during the opening round of the 2024 Lugazi Sugar centenary golf tournament on Thursday, 21st November at the newly opened Lugazi Hills and Country club.

The reigning Uganda Amateur Golf champion optimally utilized the local knowledge of the course that he was bred on as he struck 2-under-69 in 18 holes.

Akena had five birdie scores on holes 3, 7, 13, 14 and 16, 3 bogies (5, 12, 15) and 10 pars (1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 17 and 18).

Sande Lulet and Peter Mayende are four shots off the leader. Titus Okwong is currently fourth with 5-over-74 whilst the duo of Juma Abiti and Elton Thembo are 6 shots from Akena.

Round two will be played on Friday, 22nd November 2024 ahead of the final showdown on the subsequent day.

The championship is a global world ranking tournament as the gross players will score points for positions in the world among the top amateurs.

The Lugazi centenary golf championship marks 100 years of Sugar Corporation of Uganda Lugazi (SCOUL) in sugar manufacturing business.

Meanwhile, David Kamulindwa Amooti scored level par (71) to boss the professional field after round one in 18 holes.

Kamulindwa opened the day brilliantly with a birdie score on par-4 hole 1 off 265 yards.

He then had successive pars on 2 and 3 before scratching the par-4 hole 4. He continued with pars on 5 and 6, a birdie on 7, pars on 8 and 9 for a modest 33 score on the front.

The long hitter crossed to the back with a double bogie on par-5 hole 10, pars on 11 and 12, a birdie on 13, bogie on 14, another birdies on 15 and finished the final 3 holes (16, 17 and 18) with pars.

Canary Kabise is chasing two shots as Marvin Kibirige is 4 shots off Kamulindwa.

Three golfers Phillip Kasozi, Abraham Ainamani and Emmanuel Opio Onito are tied on fourth with 5-over-76.

Fred Wanzala (77), James Koto (77) and Davis Kato (79) complete the top 10.

Round two of the professionals whose kitty is Ug.Shs 10,000,000 will come on Friday.

City Tyres is the main sponsor of the tournament which climaxes on Saturday, 23rd November 2024.
