March Madness is one of the most highly anticipated sporting events on the calendar.

The tournament is the NCAA Division 1 basketball championships for men and women and has existed since 1939.

The format is is a single-elimination tournament of 68 teams that compete in seven rounds for the national championship.

The penultimate round is known as the Final Four, when just four teams are left, fighting it out for a place in the Championship games.

Selection Sunday on March 16 will reveal the full NCAA tournament bracket with all the team and seeds.

The action will officially tip off on March 18 and will run to the women’s Championship at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida on April 6 and then 24 hours later the men’s Championship game at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

One of the most popular ways for fans to participate in March Madness is through creating their own brackets as they look to predict the winner of the tournament.

As the build up intensifies, organisations across the US have released their rewards for bracket picks and one prize blows the rest away.

X, formley Twitter, have announced that their Grand Prize for a perfect bracket is a trip to Mars on SpaceX’s Starship vehicle.

If there is no perfect bracket, the runner-up prize is a $100,000 reward.

  • UConn Huskies – 2023
  • Kansas Jayhawks – 2022
  • Baylor Bears – 2021
  • Virginia Cavaliers- 2019
  • Villanova Wildcats – 2018
  • North Carolina Tar Heels – 2017

  • Duke Blue Devils – 2015
  • UConn Huskies – 2014

To compete, fans have to share their bracket on X where they can then track live leaderboards throughout the tournament.

A trip to Mars as the reward is one that is remarkable but also makes sense when considering how unlikely achieving a perfect bracket is.

According to the NCAA, the odds are of achieving a perfect bracket is 1 in 120.2 billion.

No one has gotten a verifiable perfect bracket in the history of the NCAA.

The likelihood of achieving the feat is so unlikely that Warren Buffet in 2014 offered $1 billion to anyone who could pull it off.

Also up for grabs this year – and a little less opulent – is ESPN’s offer of $135,000 in prizes in various different bracket rewards

Fellow broadcaster CBS Sports is offering winners tickets to next year’s Final Four in both tournaments plus $6,000 toward hotels and transportation.

Yahoo Sports’ Bracket Madness features a single $25,000 grand prize to the contestant who most accurately selected the winner of all 67 games in the tournament.

Ultimately, a perfect bracket is unlikely to happen but there is plenty on offer, and for anyone managing to make their own history, it could prove to be out of this world.
