26th Kinyara Open tees off, Kasozi leads after 27 holes of action | Amateurs

Joseph Kasozi is in the lead of the 26th Kinyara Golf Open for the amateurs after the opening day of the rain-laden round.

Kasozi, a member of the Kinyara golf club opened the first day of action with 107 gross in 27 holes played.

In the first 18 holes, Kasozi who is playing off handicap two scored 2-over-73 with five birdies (7, 10, 11, 13 and 16), 2 bogies (1, 5), 2 double bogies (3, 15) as well as 9 pars (2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 12, 14, 17 and 18).

For the first 9 holes of the second round, Kasozi commenced with a par score on par 4 hole 1, a birdie on par 3 hole 2, pars on 3 and 4 before scratching hole 5.

He continued a second birdie on par 4 hole 3, pars on 7 and 8 before another birdies on par-5 hole 9.

Ivan Sekulima, a member of Lake Victoria Serena Golf resort and spa is second on the leaderboard with 113 gross.

Sekulima is a shot better than the duo of Abdullah Kakooza (Mary Louise Simkinn Memorial golf club, Namulonge) and Christopher Basaliza.

Uganda Golf Club’s Ian Kalema (117) completes the top five players after 27 holes of action.

The amateur tournament is part of the world amateur golf ranking system as the top golfers will score points.

Meanwhile, Grace Kasango took a two-shot lead with a 1-under-70 score after the opening round of 18 holes for the professionals.

 “It was a good round apart from the rains that halted our play for about two hours to kill off the momentum after hole 6” Kasango disclosed to Kawowo Sports.

“I lost a ball on hole four but recovered well to play on. I expect a far better round on Friday (round two)” Kasango added.

Two golfers are tied in second position on 1-over-72; Saidi Mawa and Samuel Kato.

Ronald “Ronnie King” Bukenya and Joseph Mawejje are jointly tied in fourth with 2-over-73.

They are followed by Emmanuel Ogwang and Herman Mutawe (76 apiece) with Fred Nkuranga, Tom Jingo, Adolf Muhumuza, Brian Mwesigwa and Peter Ssendaula all returning 6-over-77 in 18 holes.

The second and final round will be played on Friday, 22nd November 2024 with all the professionals fighting tooth and nail to make the cut for the total Ug.Shs 10,000,000 kitty in the bag.
