Animosity at the Presidents Cup reached new levels on Saturday as Team USA got revenge on the Internationals – and one golfer in particular.

The Americans were stunned into silence as Friday as the unfancied Internationals came back from 5-0 down to stage their own clean sweep and make it 5-5.

But Team USA would have the last laugh by surging into an 11-7 lead on a fiery Saturday which saw tension boil over.

There has been no love lost between the two sides – not least between Tom Kim and Scottie Scheffler on Day One.

Tom Kim was at the centre of things once more during a wild foursomes match alongside Si Woo Kim against Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele on Day Three.

With the overall match in the balance, Si Woo Kim holed an unlikely chip shot at the 16th to draw level with two holes left, sparking wild celebrations in front of a partisan International crowd at Royal Montreal in Canada.

The South Korean ran around the green, using his hands as a pillow and copying basketball icon Steph Curry’s ‘night-night’ celebration.

However, Team USA would ultimately win the match as Cantlay converted a clutch birdie putt on 18.

When Si Woo Kim missed his attempt to tie the match, American Wyndham Clark was seen directing Steph Curry’s ‘night-night’ celebration back at the South Korean in response.

Speaking afterwards, Tom Kim suggested some of the American antics went too far.

He said: “I could hear some players cursing at us. That part wasn’t really… I don’t think there was good sportsmanship there.

“But it’s all part of the fun. I understand it.”

Tom Kim added: “I do it too. You see me out there throwing fist pumps and jumping on the green.

“It’s all part of it, I get it. I just don’t think there’s a need to look at someone and curse at them. I just don’t think there’s a need for it.”

He continued: “I understand it. I don’t get hurt about it. My feelings don’t hurt at all. I hope there’s no negative comments. That’s not what I’m trying to do here.

“I just feel like there’s always little things, like what could I have done better? It’s just certain things like that.”

However, Cantlay and Schauffele insisted they did not disrespect their opponents.

Schauffele said: “I felt like Pat and I, we treated the Kims with the utmost respect.

“We’re trying to quiet the crowds down when they were hitting. We’re trying to quiet the crowds down when we were hitting. It was fair take, give and go.

“I have no clue if anyone was doing any of that. I don’t believe any of our guys would do something like that. So I’m not sure what he was hearing.”

Cantlay, who wasn’t aware of the ‘night-night’ celebration before Saturday, added: “I don’t care what they do. I know they’re going to get amped up if they make birdies.

“They made a ton of birdies. They got amped up in front of the home crowd. Home crowd loved it. That’s great. That’s great for golf.

“We just made one more birdie.”
