Scottie Scheffler’s team confronted a Presidents Cup fan on Saturday after a vulgar comment about the golfer’s wife.

The world no.1, playing alongside American teammate Russell Henley, was competing in a foursomes match against International duo Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im when the incident occurred.

Walking down the 16th fairway, reporters heard a spectator at Royal Montreal shout offensive remarks at Scheffler and his wife Meredith, who was following the group.

Scheffler’s father, Scott, was also present – and stepped outside the ropes to approach the fan along with the golfer’s caddie Ted Scott.

Police soon intervened and ejected the man from the golf course.

Officials later confirmed an ‘incident’ had occurred, although they did not provide any further details.

The match would end moments later as Scheffler and Henley made par to claim a 3&2 victory.

Scheffler did not speak to media after the match, but his playing partner Henley insisted they were not distracted by the incident.

“No, not really,” he said. “Once it happened, we just kind of refocused and got back in it.”

It came after a tense match which saw Scheffler locked in a heated conversation with Matsuyama and Im over a drop on 15.

Scheffler was seen throwing one of his opponent’s clubs back into their bag and the handshake between the teams on the following hole appeared quite frosty, too.

Tensions reached boiling point in Canada after a rollercoaster opening two days.

Team USA, who have won all but two of the 14 Presidents Cups in history, surged into a 5-0 lead on day one before a stunning comeback from the Internationals made it 5-5 on day two.

Tom Kim had asked the Royal Montreal crowd to be more vocal after day one and the Americans have faced a hostile environment ever since.

Nevertheless, Team USA take an 11-7 lead into the final day after a dramatic finish on Saturday.

Patrick Cantlay secured a full point in the final foursomes match on 18, leading to wild celebrations as the Americans clapped back at Si Woo Kim for doing Steph Curry’s ‘night-night’ celebration a few holes earlier.

Meanwhile, Tom Kim accused the American team of swearing at him and playing partner Si Woo Kim, something Cantlay and Xander Schauffele later denied.
