Anyone who watched European football last season would struggle to argue against the view that Bayer Leverkusen were among the continent’s top teams.
Xabi Alonso’s team became the first side in history to go an entire Bundesliga campaign unbeaten on their way to winning the club’s first ever title.
Yet we did not get the chance to see how Leverkusen would do against the other top teams in Europe. Unlike other domestic upstarts such as Monaco in 2016/17 and Ajax in 2018/19 (both of whom reached the semi-finals), Leverkusen were absent from the Champions League.
They did reach the final of the Europa League, where they were comfortably beaten by Atalanta. But it would have been fascinating to see how far Leverkusen could have gone in the Champions League, not least because Borussia Dortmund (who finished four places below them in the Bundesliga) finished as runners-up.
At least we have the chance to witness their attempts this season. Alonso announced he would not be leaving Leverkusen back in March, and the club then succeeded in keeping their squad intact over the summer.
They got their continental campaign off to a fantastic start, thumping Feyenoord 4-0 on matchday one. Leverkusen scored all four of their goals in the first half, allowing them to ease off after the break.
Alonso’s team are third in the 36-team standings heading into matchday two, when AC Milan will visit the BayArena. The Rossoneri took the lead against Liverpool last time out but ultimately succumbed to a 3-1 loss, leaving them under a little pressure ahead of Tuesday’s tussle in Germany.
Milan had a shaky start to the season, to the point that Paulo Fonseca was thought to be in danger of being sacked had his team not beaten Venezia in the middle of September.
However, Milan have now won three games in a row in Serie A, including a 2-1 victory over Inter in the derby. They will arrive in Germany with renewed belief that they can compete with teams like Bayer Leverkusen, although that is easier said than done.

AC Milan have turned things around in recent weeks, but it is worth noting that each of their victories over Venezia, Inter and Lecce came at San Siro.
Curiously, this is the first time since August that Milan are playing in a stadium other than their own – and they are yet to win on rival territory under Fonseca.

Moreover, while the triumph over Inter was undeniably impressive, we should not read too much into victories over Venezia and Lecce, both of whom are patently inferior to Bayer Leverkusen.
Alonso’s team drew 1-1 with Bayern Munich on Saturday. In truth, they were a touch fortunate to avoid defeat after mustering up just 0.06 xG at the Allianz Arena.
But Leverkusen are a match for anyone at the BayArena and we expect them to get the job done when Milan come to town.

Bayer Leverkusen’s comebacks were the stuff of legend last season.
On numerous occasions they turned defeats into draws and draws into wins by striking shortly before the final whistle.
Leverkusen won 23 out of 34 second halves in 2023/24, by far the best record in the Bundesliga. They did even better in the Europa League, triumphing in the second period in 11 out of 13 contests.
Leverkusen never know when they are beaten. Even if things do not go well in the opening 45 minutes, they tend to come on strong after the interval. Alonso’s side will certainly not panic if they are level or behind with 45 minutes on the clock.
AC Milan could come under real pressure in the second half, which is when Leverkusen tend to do their best work.

Florian Wirtz to score any time
Everyone will have their own view of who Bayer Leverkusen’s most important player is, but few have a stronger claim to that title than Florian Wirtz.
The attacking midfielder is the man who makes Leverkusen tick, and his ability to both create and convert chances is invaluable for Alonso’s team.
The 21-year-old has started the season brightly, finding the back of the net six times in as many matches across the Bundesliga and Champions League.
Wirtz bagged a brace as Leverkusen thrashed Feyenoord a fortnight ago and AC Milan will have to keep a close eye on him here.
Even that might not be enough to stop the Germany international, though.
