Aston Villa v Bayern Munich preview

Aston Villa head into their huge Champions League clash with Bayern Munich on Wednesday night having lost their five match winning streak on Sunday afternoon after being held 2-2 by Ipswich.

Unai Emery’s side still have a six match unbeaten run though and have fallen to defeat just once in their eight games this season, and Villa Park will no doubt be bouncing for the return of Champions League football to the West Midlands.

The Villans have won each of their last two home games, scoring three goals in each game and will be partaking in their second Champions League game of the season following their convining 3-0 win over Young Boys in Bern a fortnight ago.

Bayern Munich also saw their winning streak come to an end on the weekend as their 100% start to the new season under brand new manager Vincent Kompany was brought to a halt by the defending Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.

The six-time European champions started the campaign under their new manager Vincent Kompany with six victories in a row, in which they averaged just shy of five goals per game, which sees the Bavarians top the Bundesliga table by a point as things stand.

The German side head into the second round of Champions League matches sitting pretty at the top of the league phase table following their 9-2 thrashing of Dinamo Zagreb in their opener a fortnight ago.

Wednesday night’s match will be of even bigger note to those at Aston Villa, as Bayern Munich were their opponents when the club became champions of Europe for the first and, so far, only time, winning 1-0 in Rotterdam 42 years ago.

Emery boasts a 2-0 head-to-head record against Kompany in their managerial careers, though both victories came in the Premier League last season whilst the latter was in charge of a Burnley side who ended up getting relegated.

The Spaniard does have a good record against Bayern Munich though, with a 2-1 record from four previous meetings with them, most recently knocking the German side out of the Champions League at the quarter final stage in 2022 while in managing Villarreal.
