Benfica vs Atletico Madrid predictions

Atletico Madrid were involved in a typically feisty and fractious Madrid derby on Sunday. The fallout from the game has seeped into the start of the week and is in danger of overshadowing the build-up to Wednesday’s clash with Benfica.

Purely in terms of the football, it was not the best match at the Civitas Metropolitano. Madrid took the lead through Eder Militao, before Angel Correa notched a last-gasp equaliser in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time, after which Marcos Llorente was sent off.

The main talking point centred on the temporary suspension of the encounter following an incident in which Atletico ultras threw objects at Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

The group of fans in question, the Frente Atletico, is controversial:  it has a reputation for organised violence and far-right politics. Many other Atletico supporters are frustrated that the club has refused to banish such fans in recent years.

It was notable that, when the Atletico players went to applaud the group after the draw with Madrid, spectators in other parts of the stadium jeered.

Diego Simeone condemned those who hurled objects in the direction of Courtois, although he also hinted that the former Atletico goalkeeper may have provoked the home supporters.

With so much division surrounding the club and its most notorious fan group, it may actually come as a relief that Atletico’s next Champions League game is away from home.

Simeone’s team got their European campaign off to a winning start, beating RB Leipzig 2-1 a fortnight ago.

They fell behind to an early Benjamin Sesko goal on that occasion, before Antoine Griezmann equalised shortly before the half-hour mark. Atletico once again relied on some late drama, with Jose Gimenez notching the winner in the last minute.

Benfica were also triumphant by the same scoreline, as they overcame Red Star Belgrade away from home. Two wins from upcoming home games against Atletico and Feyenoord would leave Benfica dreaming of a top-eight finish in the new-look league phase.

This looks set to be an intriguing encounter at the Estadio da Luz, with neither team having lost since Benfica went down to Famalicao on the opening weekend of the season.

Benfica vs Atletico Madrid betting tips

Both teams will be targeting a victory when Benfica host Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

Draw

Benfica have won four out of four at home this season, although it must be said that none of their opponents – Casa Pia, Estrela da Amadora, Santa Clara and Gil Vicente – are of the same calibre as Atletico Madrid.

As for the Colchoneros, two of their away games in La Liga have ended in victory and the other two have finished with the scores level.

Atletico are still unbeaten in 2024/25, although there have been a fair few draws in that time.

Indeed, with 50 percent of their La Liga games ending in a tie, there are concerns that Atletico will not be able to challenge for the title unless they can turn more of those into wins.

A draw would be a good result on this occasion, however, and we fancy Atletico’s chances of avoiding defeat by Benfica.

Both teams to score

Benfica drew a blank in that surprise 2-0 loss to Famalicao in gameweek one of the Primeira Liga campaign, but they have found the back of the net in every game since then.

Their last three league matches have produced 12 goals, with only Sporting CP having scored more often in the Portuguese top flight so far.

Atletico Madrid, as is their wont under Simeone, are less free-flowing going forward: in five of their last six La Liga outings, they have scored either one goal or zero.

Even so, Atletico have the attacking quality to find the net against Benfica, who have failed to keep a clean sheet against inferior sides like Moreirense, Santa Clara and Gil Vicente in recent weeks.

If those teams can score against Benfica, so can Atletico.

Alexander Sorloth to score any time

Simeone has switched between 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 formations at the start of the campaign, but his use of the latter in the Madrid derby suggests that will be his go-to shape in the big games.

That is not ideal for Julian Alvarez, who prefers to play centrally but was deployed on the left-hand side of midfield against Real Madrid.

That left Alexander Sorloth to spearhead the attack, with Antoine Griezmann getting up in support and at times dropping between the lines.

Sorloth should get the nod at centre-forward again on Wednesday. Provided he does, he would be a good pick to find the net against Benfica.

True, the Norwegian has only scored once for Atletico since his summer transfer, but Simeone has faith in Sorloth and Benfica should not take the threat he poses lightly.
