The Dallas Mavericks, fresh off an NBA Finals appearance, have the city and its fans reaching an all-time high fever pitch as the season draws near.

Dallas exudes excitement after reaching the NBA Finals last season, with sky-high expectations riding on the shoulders of Luka Dončić, Kyrie Irving and new face, Klay Thompson.

Thompson is in new threads for the first time in his 13 year career

The Mavericks signed the long-time Golden State Warrior to a three-year, $50 million contract in free agency, with hopes that he can be the missing piece that gets them over the hump.

And let’s just say, Dallas fans couldn’t be more excited.

After the official team account posted a video on X of Thompson shooting around, with the caption, “Captain Klay getting right to work ,” the fans responded in absolute delirium.

“MVP season coming up,” one fan said.

Another added, “I don’t care how old he’s getting – guy is remarkable.”

Followed by another, “I cant believe this is my life.”

Of course the 34-year-old Thompson is nowhere near an MVP-caliber player at this point in his career, but Mavs fans don’t care.

They are excited at the thought of Irving driving towards the basket, the defense crashing in around him and kicking it out to Thompson beyond the arc and doing what he does best.

Draining three-pointers.

In theory, the spacing Thompson’s game provides, will open up the floor for both Dončić and Irving, and vice-versa.

By all accounts this should be a seamless fit.

Dončić and Irving believe Thompson is exactly the type of player this roster needed, as they praised him and the fit, at the team’s media day.

“When me and Kai, when we have the ball, you basically can’t help off of Klay,” Doncic said. “Because if you leave him wide open, he’s going to make it. So I think the spacing is going to be crucial for us, but more of that, I will tell you after a couple games.”

“I feel like our dreams can be possible because he’s here now,” Irving said. “He’s added a great value to our championship aspirations.”

Head coach Jason Kidd knows exactly what it’s like to have a marksman of Thompson’s caliber on the team.

“We’ve had shooters, but we haven’t had a Jason Terry or Klay Thompson,” Kidd said. “This is rare air. When you talk about Klay, he’s going to go down as one of the best shooters of all-time.

“So to have him on our side, it just makes the game offensively easier. Spacing is a big thing in our league.”

Thompson himself believes he, “complements the roster very well” but also acknowledged how it will take some to adjust in a system with new guys.

“”I think it will take a couple weeks just to get used to this new system, but luckily opening night is not until [Oct. 24],” Thompson said.

“So this preseason might be the most important one I’ve had in so many years, and I can’t wait to get going tomorrow and learn this system. But I do know I’m a hooper, so I can adjust accordingly and I look forward to doing that.”

Thompson is indeed a hooper. No question about that. He may not be an MVP-level hooper at this point, but he can still get a bucket.

Besides, Dallas knows that in order for them to get where they want to go, and that’s raising the Larry O’Brien Trophy in June, the dude wearing #77 will have to be not only the team’s MVP, but the whole league’s most valuable player.
