Ferencvaros vs Tottenham predictions

Somewhat inevitably, most of the focus after Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-0 triumph over Manchester United was on the defeated team rather than the victors.

United were dismal even before Bruno Fernandes was shown a red card just before half-time, and Erik ten Hag is now under huge pressure once again.

There was plenty to like from a Spurs perspective, though. Ange Postecoglou’s side played with the sort of intent and intensity that was sorely lacking from their opponents.

Their passing was slick and the defence was, for the most part, untroubled by United’s attacking players. Whisper it, but it looks like Tottenham may have turned a corner.

They certainly needed to. Tottenham were slow out of the blocks this term, winning only one of their first four games. That stretch included back-to-back defeats by top-four rivals Newcastle United and local rivals Arsenal.

The 2-1 victory over Coventry City in the EFL Cup increasingly looks like a turning point. Spurs trailed the Championship side until the 88th minute, when Djed Spence levelled the score. Brennan Johnson then notched the winner in the second minute of stoppage time.

Tottenham fans are desperate to win the club’s first trophy since 2008 and Postecoglou has not shied away from his record of picking up silverware in his second season with a side. Falling at the first hurdle in the EFL Cup would have been damaging for the manager.

Since that defeat of Coventry, Tottenham have won three matches on the trot – including a 3-0 defeat of Qarabag on matchday one of the Europa League.

Champions League teams no longer drop down into Europe’s secondary competition, so the winner will be one of the 36 sides currently involved in the league phase. Of those, the bookies make Tottenham the favourites, ahead of Manchester United, Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad.

A top-eight finish is the first objective for Spurs, since that would send them straight through to the round of 16. Avoiding the knockout stage play-offs would be useful in terms of their push for a top-four finish in the Premier League too.

Next up is a trip to Budapest to face Ferencvaros, whom Spurs are widely expected to get the better of.

Ferencvaros vs Tottenham betting tips

Tottenham Hotspur should come out on top when they take on Ferencvaros on Thursday.

Tottenham/Tottenham half-time/full-time

Ferencvaros qualified for the Europa League by winning the Hungarian title last season, then coming through the play-offs having already dropped out of the Champions League qualifiers.

It was a close-run thing, with Ferencvaros ultimately overcoming Bosnian outfit Borac Banja Luka on penalties after a 1-1 aggregate draw.

They went down 2-1 to Anderlecht on matchday one and, despite home advantage, it will be tough for Pascal Jansen’s charges to pick up a positive result when Tottenham come to town.

Postecoglou named a strong side for the victory over Qarabag, demonstrating his intention to take this competition seriously.

Spurs have rediscovered their rhythm and they will simply have too much quality from Ferencvaros, who could find themselves behind at the interval.

Go for Tottenham/Tottenham in the half-time/full-time market at 37/40 with Betano

Tottenham to score in both halves

Tottenham will hope to have Son Heung-min available again soon after he missed the Manchester United game through injury, although Postecoglou is unlikely to risk his captain from the start here.

That should not be too much of an issue against Ferencvaros, not least because Spurs coped just fine without the South Korean at Old Trafford.

With the exception of the 1-0 loss to Arsenal in the north London derby, Tottenham have not had much trouble creating opportunities in the first couple of months of the campaign.

That should be the case again when they face Ferencvaros, who are going strong in Hungary but have a mediocre record in Europe so far this term (including qualifiers, they have already played seven matches in continental competition).

Back Tottenham to score in both halves at 20/21 with Betano

Brennan Johnson to score any time

Brennan Johnson has found form all of a sudden. The Tottenham forward has scored in each of his last four appearances, including during 45 minutes on the pitch against Qarabag.

The Wales international showed signs of promise in his debut campaign in north London, but he only managed to find the back of the net on five occasions in all competitions.

Johnson is just one strike away from matching that tally in October and we like his chances of making it five consecutive goalscoring games on Thursday.

As mentioned above, the signs are that Postecoglou will name a strong XI to face Ferencvaros and Johnson is undoubtedly a part of Spurs’ best XI right now.

The Hungarian champions will have to keep a close eye on his movement at the back post and runs in behind.

Choose Brennan Johnson to score any time at 5/4 with Betano
