Golf: Uganda plays second fiddle to Kenya on opening day | Africa Region IV

Africa Region IV Golf Championship (Day one – Two rounds)

Uganda is five points behind Kenya after the opening two rounds of the 2024 Africa Region IV golf championship in Rwanda.

The first day of action witnessed the 36 holes’ action of grueling golf played in two rounds at the Kigali Golf Resort and Villas course on Friday, October 4, 2024.

Kenya’s best three golfers scored 435 points, five better than Uganda’s top three.

Elvis Muigua (75, 72), John Lejirma (72, 73) and Micheal Karanga (70, 76) put Kenya ahead on day one.

Uganda is closely following the leaders with 440 points coming from Joseph Kasozi (81, 71), Joseph Reagan Akena (73, 73) and  team captain Joseph Cwinya-ai (70, 74).

Hosts Rwanda are in the third place with 453 points.

Felix Dusabe (78, 75), Jacques Byiringiro (74,76) and Benjamin Mukisa (72, 78).

Mauritius (456 points), Seychelles (456 points) and Ethiopia (505 points) follow suit respectively.

Individual players’ standings:

Individually, Mauritius’ Adrian Andrade is in the lead with 2-under (138) in 36 holes.

Andrade scored 72 and 66 in the first and second rounds respectively.

Uganda’s Cwinya-ai closely follows with level par score (144) after scoring 70 in the first round and 2-over in the subsquent round.

Kenya’s Lejirma is third on the leaderboard with 72 and 73 scores (145).

The top five positions are completed by Uganda’s Akena and Kenyan Karanga who are tied on 146 gross apiece.

The tournament continues on Saturday, 5th October and will climax on Sunday, 6th October 2024 with the flag lowering and closing ceremonies.

The tournament’s chief referee is Africa Golf Confederation maestro Michael Mahachi from Zimbabwe.
