Derrick Henry has joined an exclusive club.
A club that may no longer see anymore new members after Henry.
Henry has complimented Lamar Jackson and this offense seamless so far into the young seasonGetty
Henry became just the 32nd running back to rush for over 10,000 yards in a career making him the first one to get there since Marshawn Lynch did it in 2017.
The way the NFL game has evolved, most notably going from a ground and pound attack to a pass happy league, the way of the running back may be passing us by.
It may already have.
The days of another running back reaching the 10k milestone may no longer be a reality.
The next closest running back is Ezekiel Elliott at 8,985 and after that, it’s Joe Mixon all the way down at 6,596.
Unless Elliott hangs around a couple more seasons, it’s not looking too good.
Considering through four games, he has a total of 81 yards on 24 carries, getting to 10,000 yards seems unlikely at this point.
Guys like Jonathan Taylor and Saquon Barkley might have a shot, if they stay healthy and remain a focal point for their respective offenses.
But that’s the thing. In today’s game, the running backs aren’t the focal points.
Even at the dreaded 30-year-old mark, Henry is still looking elite as ever
Not to mention that running backs seem to be found a dime a dozen these days and are constantly being replaced with younger guys in the draft.
The shelf life of an NFL running back was always short, but now it seems shorter than ever.
Henry also scored his 100th touchdown, which only 26 other players have ever done.
And only eight others have rushed for 10,000 yards and 100 touchdowns.
A list that includes Jim Brown, John Riggins, Walter Payton, Marcus Allen, Emmitt Smith, Marshall, LaDainian Tomlinson, Adrian Peterson and now Henry.
He accomplished both these feats in his 124th career game.
Making him only the fifth player to have 10,000 rushing yards and 100 touchdowns from scrimmage in their first 125 career games.
Henry has been a perfect fit for this Raven’s offense through the early portion of the season.
Lining up next to and behind the reigning MVP, Lamar Jackson, has made for an unstoppable rushing attack thus far.
We may never see another running back reach 10,000 yards again, but there’s no saying we can’t see Henry hit 11,000.
