England are back in Nations League action this week as Lee Carsley eyes history against Greece at Wembley, live on talkSPORT.

The Three Lions made the perfect start to life under Carsley in the last international break, beating the Republic of Ireland and Finland 2-0.

It means the interim manager is one win away from becoming the first manager to win his first three competitive games in charge since Fabio Capello in 2008.

And if England beat Greece to nil, he will also become the first-ever boss to go unbeaten in his first three without conceding a goal.

So history beckons for Carsley but as the Greeks are also unbeaten in the Nations League this campaign and haven’t let in a goal either, it won’t be easy.

England vs Greece: ‘Give that man a knighthood!’

You might remember the last time Greece came to England for a competitive game.

It was the small case of a crucial World Cup qualifier in October 2001 and it produced one of the most iconic Three Lions moments.

David Beckham stood over a free-kick in stoppage time at Old Trafford, with a goal needed to book their place at the 2002 World Cup.

And you know the rest.

Beckham bent one of his signature set pieces into the top corner to level the scores at 2-2 and achieve the draw needed to send England to the tournament.

The commentary on that day has become iconic, with the goal cementing Beckham’s status as a footballing legend…

“I don’t believe it…David Beckham scores the goal to take England all the way to the World Cup finals. Give that man a knighthood!”

England are unbeaten in all nine of their meetings with Greece across all competitions (W7 D2), keeping a clean sheet in seven of those matches.

England have won 16 of their last 21 competitive home matches across all competitions (D3 L2), including each of their last five. The Three Lions have kept six clean sheets in their last nine such fixtures.

England vs Greece: Team news and predicted line-up

England were dealt three injury blows ahead of this game.

Both Ezri Konsa and Morgan Gibbs-White have pulled out of the squad to recover from injuries suffered at the weekend.

Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo also stepped out of the squad due to fitness issues.

So that has led to Carsley calling up Liverpool’s Curtis Jones and Newcastle’s Tino Livramento as replacements.

Captain Harry Kane was also a worry after seemingly getting injured for Bayern Munich.

Kane was taken off with a knock against Frankfurt but he has now been cleared of a serious issue and will be part of the squad.

Konsa missing out will leave Carsley with very limited options at centre-back as John Stones and Marc Guehi are the only others.

There is some great depth in the Three Lions’ midfield though, with Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden back in the team.

But Foden may not come straight into the line-up, with Cole Palmer in fine form and Anthony Gordon starting in the last break.

Dominic Solanke has received his first call-up in seven years and he’ll be competing with Ollie Watkins for a starting spot should Kane be rested for this opening game of the break.

Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Nick Pope (Newcastle United)

Defenders: Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), John Stones (Manchester City), Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Levi Colwill (Chelsea), Rico Lewis (Manchester City), Kyle Walker (Man City), Tino Livramento (Newcastle).

Midfielders: Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Conor Gallagher (Atletico Madrid), Declan Rice (Arsenal), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Angel Gomes (Lille), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Curtis Jones (Liverpool).

Forwards: Dominic Solanke (Tottenham), Jack Grealish (Manchester City), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle United), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Noni Madueke (Chelsea) Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa).

England captain Harry Kane has scored 26 goals in 26 competitive home appearances for the Three Lions, scoring on each of his last six such outings (9 goals) – only Steve Bloomer (1895-1899) and Wayne Rooney (2012-2015) have ever scored in seven straight competitive home games for the nation.

Only Slovenia’s Benjamin Sesko (4) scored more goals than Greece’s Fotis Ioannidis (3) across the opening two matchdays of the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League, who has scored five goals across his last six international appearances overall.

England vs Greece: What has been said?

Carsley piled praise onto Jones last year and now he has called him up to the senior squad to potentially claim his first senior England cap.

The pair worked together in the U21s and now they’re reunited.

“Similar to Cole [Palmer], I’m not surprised one bit [by how Jones has been doing],” said Carsley in 2023.

“Curtis would be up there with the most talented players I’ve worked with.

“He’s got everything that you need as a midfielder. He can run, he is very, very fast, he’s powerful, he can score, he can assist, he can defend, he can take the ball – all he needs is opportunity.

“The way he’s played when I’ve seen him play, he’s been outstanding. He just needed to stay fit.”

Greece are winless in their last 12 matches against nations ranked inside the top five of the FIFA rankings (D6 L6), since a 1-0 win over France at EURO 2004 – their most recent such fixture ended 2-2 however, against France (ranked 2nd) in November 2023.

Since the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2018-19, no team has won more games in the competition than Greece (W13 D3 L4), who have conceded the fewest goals (8) and kept the most clean sheets (14) of any nation in that period.
