Italy vs Belgium predictions

Neither Italy nor Belgium were able to depart Euro 2024 with their heads held high.

The Azzurri scraped through to the round of 16 courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Albania and a 1-1 draw with Croatia, against whom they needed a last-gasp equaliser on matchday three.

Their stay in Germany was ended a few days later, though, as a dismal display from Luciano Spalletti’s side led to a 2-0 loss to Switzerland, who were superior in all departments.

Belgium also advanced from their group unconvincingly. The Red Devils lost their first game 1-0 to Slovakia, before edging out Romania 2-0 in their second outing.

A nervy 0-0 draw with Ukraine sent them through to the knockout phase, where Belgium were promptly sent packing by France.

Both teams could do with reasserting their credentials in the Nations League. This may not be as big a prize as the European Championship or the World Cup, but it is still worth winning – especially for two nations in need of a pick-me-up.

Italy got their campaign off to a fantastic start last month. They stunned France at the Parc des Princes, where they conceded the opener in the first minute before striking three times to win 3-1. A 2-1 defeat of Israel on matchday two kept them top of the group.

Belgium were also triumphant over Israel, winning 3-1 in Brussels, but they were once again beaten by France a few days later.

Romelu Lukaku will not play for his country until 2025 after reportedly requesting the rest of the year off while he settles in at Napoli. Kevin De Bruyne is also absent as he continues his comeback from injury.

Matteo Gabbia has earned a call-up for Italy and will hope to win his first cap, either on Thursday against Belgium or on Monday against Israel. There are four more uncapped players in the squad: Michele Di Gregorio, Caleb Okoli, Niccolo Pisilli and Daniel Maldini.

Federico Chiesa has again been left out after his struggles to establish himself at Liverpool, while Nicolo Barella is missing through injury.

Italy vs Belgium betting tips

Three points are up for grabs in the 2024/25 Nations League when Italy take on Belgium this week.

Draw

Italy may need a different game plan on Thursday to the one they used in that excellent victory over France on matchday one.

Les Bleus had more of the ball that night, whereas Italy will be obliged to take the initiative to a greater extent given they will have home advantage against Belgium. Whether or not that makes them less effective remains to be seen.

Without both Lukaku and De Bruyne, Domenico Tedesco is likely to make defensive solidity his foremost objective when he takes his team to the iconic San Siro.

Belgium could therefore frustrate an Italy team that does not contain an abundance of creativity and guile, at least not compared to Azzurri sides of the past.

A draw would not be a bad result for either team and we expect this one to end with honours even.

Both teams to score

Neither team will be at full strength on Thursday, while Italy and Belgium are both weaker than they were a few years ago.

Yet that does not mean this will not be a watchable encounter. Spalletti’s sides usually play good football, while Belgium have some exciting and/or in-form players such as Jeremy Doku, Leo Trossard and Lois Openda.

Italy conceded in both matches in September and they may have some difficulties against Belgium’s attacking players, especially in transition.

Yet it is equally hard to see the Red Devils keeping a clean sheet in Milan given their defensive deficiencies.

This will not necessarily be a goal-laden affair, but both teams have a good chance of scoring at least once.

Choose both teams to score at 3/4 with Betano

Lois Openda to score any time

With Lukaku, Belgium’s all-time leading scorer, sitting out the Nations League until the quarter-finals at the earliest (if his team even get there), other attacking players have a chance to shine.

Openda, for one, either played second fiddle to Lukaku at Euro 2024, or was shunted out wide to allow him to play in his favoured position through the middle.

Openda started in that position against both Israel and France last month, and although he did not find the back of the net in either game he will almost certainly get the nod again here.

The RB Leipzig man showed that he knows where the goal is for his club side last term, notching 28 goals in all competitions.

With Lukaku having taken a leave of absence, Openda must grasp this opportunity with both hands.
