England will pay tribute to George Baldock at Wembley this evening as the Three Lions take on Greece.
It was announced yesterday that the 31-year-old was tragically found dead at his home in Athens.
Baldock sadly passed away
The defender joined Greek giants Panathinaikos in the summer after leaving Sheffield United.
Baldock was a huge fans’ favourite at Bramall Lane, and ahead of England playing Greece in the Nations League, the Three Lions will honour him.
How will England remember Baldock?
To mark the tragic news of Baldock’s passing, England and Greece will wear black armbands.
There will also be a minute’s silence before kick-off to remember Baldock and Kick It Out founder Lord Herman Ouseley, who passed away last week at the age of 79.
Greece will also wear black armbands when they face the Republic of Ireland at the weekend.
Giorgos Vagiannidis and Tasos Bakasetas, his Panathinaikos teammates, are both in the Greece team and could start at Wembley.
In a statement, his family confirmed the news, saying: “We can confirm that George has sadly passed away.
“As a family we are in shock at this terrible loss. We ask please that the media respect our privacy at this time.”
Baldock only just moved to Greece earlier this yearAFP
The Greek national team also released a statement.
“With profound sadness and sorrow, the National Team and the Greek Football Federation bid farewell to George Baldock.
“There are no words to describe the human pain caused by the news of the unexpected loss of one of our own, young, man. The moment forces silence. Condolences to his family. Condolences from his second family.”
Baldock, who had 12 caps for Greece, spent seven years at Sheffield United, making 219 appearances for the club.
He helped them to two promotions and played three years in the Premier League.
And the Blades paid their respects as well.
“Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player, George Baldock.
