Hon. Richard Ssekyondo, the chairperson of Entebbe Division B continued to prove his political might and popularity with a largely successful Independence day sports tournament.

The climax of the third Ssekyondo Independence Sports tournament was held at the Kiggungu Mapeera playground before hundreds of spectators, invested guests and well-wishers.

Football, Netball, Boxing and music capped the grand climax also graced by the Entebbe Municipality member of parliament Hon. Michael Kakembo, councilors, politicians and other area leaders.

We shall remain united through sports and music. The people of Entebbe Municipality are peaceful and need recreation which is now also a source of income. I thank the local organizing committee, the team leaders in the Kiwafu and Kiggungu wards for preparing their teams, the players, security organs and the general public.

An enviable record capacity thronged the Kiggungu Mapeera playground as the curtains of the 2024 Ssekyondo Independence sports tournament were gracefully lowered.

Persons of either gender across the varying age brackets graced this grand finale.

Football:

Lugonjo Nakiwogo won the boys’ football contest, edging Mayanzi 4-1 in post match penalties after normal time had ended goal-less under sunny conditions at the Entebbe International Airport overlooking sports facilities.

Collin Adriko was the hero, saving Ashraf “Neymar” Kigozi’s penalty and another during the shoot-out.

The winning team (Lugonjo- Nakiwogo) was rewarded with a giant glittering trophy, ball, set of jerseys, gold medals and a bull.

The runners up (Mayanz) took a set of jerseys, ball and a goat. The bronze medal match was between  Bunonko Misoli and Kiwafu.

Bunonko Misoli won 11-10 after a lengthy shoot-out following a goal-less draw in normal time.

The third placed team also got a goat and a ball.

Netball:

Kiggungu Central won the netball gold and trophy ahead of Kiwafu West. The bronze medalists were Bunonko Misoli and Kitoro central finished fourth.

The top three teams in Netball each earned a goat.

Individual Top performers:

The Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament was Lungonjo Nakiwogo’s Andrew Kizito.

Lugonjo Nakiwogo also got the most outstanding goalkeeper in Collin Adriko and former Katwe United forward Allan Tebusweke (Mayanzi) finished as top scorer.

There was a music fete to entertain the guests led by the chief organizer Hon. Ssekyondo who sang 10 of his songs, to the applause of the crowd.

There was also a performance from Katabi Music Association and a host of upcoming musicians.

The event has now become an annual social festival for the people of Entebbe Municipality.
