Hungary vs Netherlands predictions

It is hard to know exactly where the Netherlands are at as they return to action this week.

On the face of it, the summer just gone was a successful one. Ronald Koeman’s side reached the semi-finals of the European Championship, the nation’s best showing at a major international tournament since they were runners-up at World Cup 2014.

The Dutch could easily have made the final too. They were level at 1-1 with England heading into second-half stoppage time, only for Ollie Watkins to break their hearts in dramatic fashion.

Yet dig a little deeper and the achievement does not look quite so impressive. For instance, the Netherlands only managed a third-place finish in their group after edging out Poland, drawing a forgettable game against France, and losing to Austria.

Had the tournament not been expanded from 16 to 24 teams, Koeman’s charges would have fallen at the first hurdle.

The draw was also reasonably kind in the knockout phase, pairing the Netherlands with Romania (whom they beat 3-0) and Turkey (a 2-1 win).

Perhaps it is churlish to play down what was factually the national team’s best tournament showing in a decade, but a run to the semi-finals does not necessarily mean the Dutch are a major force on the continent again.

In fairness, they had a promising start to the 2024/25 Nations League last month. The Netherlands dispatched Bosnia-Herzegovina in an emphatic 5-2 victory in Eindhoven, before drawing 2-2 with Germany in an entertaining encounter in Amsterdam.

This is their first away game of the campaign, but the Netherlands will still be targeting all three points despite heading on their travels.

Hungary, for their part, were thrashed 5-0 by Germany on matchday one, before recovering somewhat to draw 0-0 with Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Having been tipped as potential dark horses for Euro 2024, Hungary flattered to deceive and were sent packing before the last 16.

A win here would go some way to putting the national team back on track, but the Dutch will be tough to beat.

Hungary vs Netherlands betting tips

The Netherlands are favourites to get the better of Hungary in this Nations League encounter.

Netherlands/Netherlands half-time/full-time

Hungary’s belief appears to be fragile right now and the Netherlands will look to take full advantage.

The home crowd in Budapest tends to generate plenty of noise when the national team is in action, so Koeman’s team will aim to silence them as quickly as possible.

The Netherlands are likely to take control early on in this game, dominating possession and ensuring Hungary spend most of the time in their own half of the field.

The Dutch seldom struggle for goals, as they demonstrated at Euro 2024 and again in the first couple of fixtures at the Nations League. Indeed, no team in any of League A’s four groups has scored as many goals so far.

The Netherlands should be ahead at the interval. If they are, it is difficult to see a way back into the game for Hungary, despite their home advantage.

Netherlands to score in both halves

There are question marks over the Netherlands defensively, despite the presence in the squad of some fine individual centre-backs.

But as mentioned above, they do not have many problems going forward. Whether they line up in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation, Koeman’s charges carry a threat in the final third.

That is bad news for Hungary, who wilted in that 5-0 defeat by Germany on matchday two.

They may have subsequently kept a clean sheet against Bosnia-Herzegovina, but this is a much sterner examination of their defensive credentials.

With the likes of Cody Gakpo, Xavi Simons, Joshua Zirkzee and Donyell Malen to call upon in the final third, the Netherlands are not exactly short of attacking options.

Cody Gakpo to score any time

Having starred at the European Championship, Gakpo was aiming to make a fast start to the club season under the management of a compatriot in Arne Slot.

But because of Luis Diaz’s fine form from the left, Gakpo has found his game time limited so far.

He did start the 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace last time out, but that was the first time all season that he has featured from the first whistle in the Premier League.

Whereas some players seem to see the international break as an inconvenience, Gakpo will be chomping at the bit to get out there in Budapest.

With Memphis Depay out of the squad, Gakpo has the chance to become his country’s new leader in attack. Hungary will have to keep a close eye on the Liverpool man throughout this clash.
