Uganda kicked off their October international fixtures with a 1-0 over South Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers to move joint top with South Africa.

Bevis Mugabi scored the lone goal a minute after restart that Paul Put’s men held on to win the game and grab all three points ahead of the return fixture in Juba on Tuesday.

Ismael Kiyonga rates the Uganda Cranes players from Mandela National stadium, Namboole.

Isma Watenga 7.0: Denied Alfred Leku with a save in the first half and also had a hand tip on the cross from the right in the second half. Didn’t have much to do but when called on, it was massive.

Kenneth Ssemakula 5.0: Hesitant to go forward when South Sudan sat deep especially in the first half. Easily beaten 2-3 times in the second half for dangerous crosses in the area.

Aziz Kayondo 6.0: Came up with a couple of teasing crosses in the area when he went up and defensively solid.

Bevis Mugabi 6.5: Right place and time to stab home the winner but didn’t look comfortable defending against Leku and later Onekalit.

Halid Lwaliwa 6.0: Never looked comfortable on the ball but didn’t give space to Leku. Cleared off the line at the death.

Ronald Ssekiganda 4.0: Rightly subbed off at halftime for Bobosi as he literally failed to stamp authority in the middle.

Khalid Aucho 6.0: Booked for dissent in the latter stages. Like most of his teammates, improved after the break after an average show in the first stanza.

Travis Mutyaba 4.0: Perhaps still lacking match fitness as he has only recently ended his free agency by moving to France. A few decent touches without necessarily hurting the opponents. Taken off at halftime.

Rogers Mato 4.0: Willing worker but very wasteful in possession. Shocking that he played full 90 minutes.

Denis Omedi 5.0: New position, new role but failed to lead the line through the centre. His game got improved when he moved to the preferred right position in the second half.

Jude Ssemugabi 6.0: His headed effort resulted into a rebound that Mugabi put home. Got better after the break.

Substitutes

Allan Okello 7.0: Involved in the build up to the goal with a brilliant cross. His introduction improved most of his teammates.

Bobosi Byaruhanga 6.0: An improvement on Ssekiganda although his usually good long-range passes failed to find targets.
