Liam Cameron believes Ben Whittaker may have been after a ‘way out’ by leaving the ring injured.

The pair met on the undercard of Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol on Saturday night but their fight ended in simply remarkable fashion.

It was a close-knit affair and the pair could barely be separated as the fifth round approached.

But remarkably they went tumbling over the top rope and out of the ring, which halted the contest at the end of the fifth.

Whittaker was left injured, and was receiving treatment on his right leg, which gave him no option to continue and the judges’ scorecards were called into action early.

It was a frustrating conclusion for both fighters, but Cameron claimed his rival was running out of steam and may have opted himself to not continue.

“Kid were knackered from round two, he was very tired,” he said in his post-fight interview with DAZN.

“He were giving me it for the last thirty seconds but he had nothing left. He had nothing left from round two.

“I definitely beat him. I don’t get a fair share, I got a split decision in my last fight and a draw this one.

“What more do I have to do? I’ve never had a promotional deal in my life.

“I did my best today and I thought I did enough to win.”

He was then asked if he thought Whittaker was looking for a way out, he said: “Yeah, 100 per cent.

“You will be able to see it on camera, you can tell.”

Whittaker was declared unable to continue, and was helped to his stool.

‘The Surgeon’ was struggling to emphasise his normal dominance on the night, with Cameron showing a resolute determination.

Despite being a massive underdog, the Sheffield native matched his rival’s work rate and clipped Whittaker on multiple occasions.

He believed he had done enough to have his hands raised, but the decision was seen as a draw on the final scorecards.

Unfortunately it wasn’t to be with ‘Benzo’ keeping hold of his perfect undefeated record for now.

It is expected that the pair will now meet in a sequel, given the unfortunate nature of the ending.

Whittaker will need assessment by medical experts to determine his injury, but could face a stint out of the ring.

He will need to recover so any rematch will now likely be arranged for 2025.
