NFL betting tips: New York Jets vs Buffalo Bills preview and picks

The New York Jets will be under more scrutiny than ever as they enter the Monday night spotlight to close out NFL Week 6 against the Buffalo Bills at MetLife Stadium.

The Jets were in London last weekend, where they lost 23-17 to the unbeaten Minnesota Vikings to fall to a 2-3 record.

They stunned the league on Tuesday by firing head coach Robert Saleh, leaving defensive coordinator Jeff Ulrich in charge on an interim basis.

The Bills have also hit trouble, suffering back-to-back losses to the Ravens and Texans after winning their first three games, and they have a number of injury issues to deal with, too.

Star quarterbacks may not be at their best

A match-up of elite quarterbacks Josh Allen and Aaron Rodgers looks made for a primetime slot, but fans may not get the high-scoring shootout they might have expected when the Jets host Buffalo.

Both the high-profile passers have been knocked around recently, with Bills QB Allen controversially cleared to stay in the game last week despite appearing to bang his head heavily, while Rodgers limped out of the game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium temporarily and said he was “definitely banged up” after spraining his left ankle.

The opposing defences could exploit any lack of mobility or confidence by the QBs, which both rank in the top 12 in the league for points per game allowed.

The Bills have injury concerns over two of their most important offensive players, with starting running back James Cook missing practice due to a toe injury and leading wide receiver Khalil Shakir unable to play in last week’s game due to an ankle problem.

The Jets have decided to hand offensive play-calling duties to Todd Downing after demoting former coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, but it is not guaranteed to provide the required spark and could even lead to more confusion after the short-notice change.

The Jets’ last four games have produced 41, 27, 19 and 40 points and that low-scoring trend could continue against a Bills team whose offensive strength has been greatly reduced since they scored 47 points against the Jaguars in Week 3. They have tallied just 30 total points over their last two outings, and this has the potential to be their lowest-scoring clash of the season so far.

Wilson should be the focus for Jets’ offence

Garrett Wilson has been the clear focus for the Jets offence this season, and the third-season wide receiver should be at the heart of any success his team has against the Bills.

Wilson has been targeted 57 times already this season, which is 24 more than any other player, and he was the intended receiver of almost half of Rodgers’ pass attempts against the Vikings, catching 13 passes for 101 yards and the touchdown which took the Jets to within three points in the fourth quarter.

Two Texans receivers had over 75 receiving yards against the Bills last week, with Nico Collins having 78 on only two catches before getting injured, while Stefon Diggs went for 82. Wilson is the only Jets receiver in their class and should be the main hope for his team again.

Jets running backs Breece Hall and Braelon Allen are an extremely talented pairing, but they could find no room against the Vikings and combined for just 36 rushing yards on 14 carries.

They had just 64 combined rushing yards on 23 carries the previous week against the Broncos, and if the Jets can’t look to their running game as they would wish, feeding Wilson regularly could again be their best option.
