Scotland vs Portugal predictions
Portugal are cruising at the midway point of the 2024/25 Nations League.
They are the only team in League A with nine points to their name, having beaten each of Croatia, Scotland and Poland since the tournament kicked off last month.
Their latest victory came in Warsaw on Saturday, as Roberto Martinez’s men ran out 3-1 winners courtesy of efforts from Bernardo Silva, Cristiano Ronaldo and an own goal from Jan Bednarek.
With a six-point lead over Poland in third place, Portugal are closing in on a place in the quarter-finals already. In the revamped format, the top two in each League A group will advance to the quarters.
If Portugal beat Scotland on Tuesday and Croatia get the better of Poland simultaneously, Martinez’s men will be through to the last eight with two games to spare.
For the sake of the manager in particular, it was always going to be important that Portugal made a strong start in the Nations League.
They underwhelmed at Euro 2024, losing to Georgia in their final group game, scraping past Slovakia on penalties in the last 16, before going down to France on spot-kicks in the quarter-finals.
The jury remains out on Martinez, but a successful Nations League campaign would help to demonstrate that the Spaniard is still the right man for the job.
Portugal suffered a scare in their first meeting with Scotland. Scott McTominay, who is thriving in Napoli following his summer switch from Manchester United, gave the visitors to Lisbon the lead. Portugal needed a late winner from Ronaldo to register a 2-1 triumph.
They were by far the better team on the night, though, and a similar showing here would almost certainly result in them collecting maximum points once more.
Scotland, for their part, have work to do. They too were disappointing at Euro 2024 and Steve Clarke’s side are yet to make amends, having lost all three matches in the group so far.
Their latest defeat came at the hands of Croatia. Scotland again took the lead away from home, only to lose 2-1. They sit bottom of the table ahead of Tuesday’s tussle with Portugal.

Scotland vs Portugal betting tips
Scotland will be aiming to cause an upset when they host Portugal in the Nations League.
Portugal to win and both teams to score
All three of Portugal’s victories so far have come without a clean sheet, with Croatia, Scotland and Poland all managing to score against them.
Portugal have given up 2.35 expected goals across their three games, so they have not been terrible defensively. Needless to say, Martinez would love a first shut-out of the campaign at Hampden Park.
Free Bet Offers
He is likely to be disappointed, though. Scotland have scored four goals up to now; their problem has not been putting the ball in the back of the net.
Hampden can be a fortress when it gets going and, despite their inferior all-round quality, Scotland will have spells of pressure.
Portugal should ultimately come through this contest unscathed, but the wait for a first clean sheet is likely to go on.
Tip Portugal to win and both teams to score at 21/10 with Betano
Goal in both halves
It is hard to envisage there not being a goal either side of half-time on Tuesday.
For starters, Portugal’s attacking riches are the envy of most of the continent.
Against Poland at the weekend, they were able to leave the likes of Diogo Jota, Joao Felix and Trincao out of their starting XI. Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva, attack-minded players first and foremost, were fielded as No.8s.
Scotland have shown in this campaign already that they are capable of breaching Portugal’s backline, but they have struggled to keep goals out at the other end. Clarke’s men have picked the ball out of their own net on seven occasions up to now.
All things considered, it is difficult to envisage this wager not paying out.
Choose a goal in both halves at 3/5 with Betano
Cristiano Ronaldo to score any time
Not for the first time in his illustrious career, Ronaldo was Portugal’s saviour in the reverse fixture at the Estadio da Luz.
With Portugal facing the prospect of dropping two points against Scotland, the 39-year-old came off the bench and struck a late winner.
Ronaldo was poor at Euro 2024, when it seemed like he was holding the national team back. But he has played well since then, scoring three times in three games – no one in League A has been more prolific.
Ronaldo is clearly past his best, but that does not mean he is unable to make an impact in matches like this.
With Portugal likely to dominate possession and Scotland set to sit deep, Ronaldo’s penalty-box prowess will be invaluable.
Choose Cristiano Ronaldo to score any time at 31/20 with Betano
