Simon Jordan has urged Ben Whittaker to take an immediate rematch against Liam Cameron.

Whittaker is widely considered to be one of British boxing’s most exciting prospects, but his trajectory has taken a hit after a controversial draw with Liam Cameron on Saturday night.

In the dying embers of the fifth round, both men bundled over the top rope, resulting in Whittaker sustaining injuries that left him unable to continue.

As more than four rounds had been completed, the fight went to a technical decision but the judges were unable to come to an agreement and ruled the contest a split draw.

Cameron was on the ascendancy when the clash was waved off and insisted that Whittaker had looked for a way out.

Meanwhile, several members of the boxing fraternity have since branded Whittaker a ‘quitter’ despite his promoter Ben Shalom revealing he had injured his ankle and neck during the fall.

Jordan believes the only way Whittaker can re-write this narrative is by running it back with Cameron and winning emphatically.

“I think he’s very fortunate to have had the incident,” he said on talkSPORT’s White and Jordan show on Thursday afternoon.

“Now I don’t know whether he swallowed it or not. Only he knows that, only he knows that no one else knows it.

“Not Ben Shalom, only Ben Whitaker knows it.

“The way that you’ll know where Ben Whitaker is when he takes the rematch against Liam Cameron and does what he said he was going to do in the first fight.

“What is equally as concerning is not whether he choked or he didn’t choke, it’s that he didn’t fight a particularly good fight.

“And this question about the power, the question about what he can and can’t do, Liam Cameron was having none of it.

“Ben Shalom said the other day, there is a distinct possibility that the second half of the fight, if he hadn’t been injured, it might have turned around.

“But it was one direction when the fight was going on. Liam Cameron was fancying this fight and looking at Ben Whitaker thinking, ‘Well, I’m not bothered about you anymore. I think I can win it.’”

Whittaker insisted during the build-up that he was going to ‘make a meme out of Cameron’ as he had done to many of his previous opponents.

But the Sheffield boxer proved to be a much sterner test than he had bargained for.

“They need to fill the vacuum,” Jordan added. “There’s lots to say about what a superstar he is and what a superstar he isn’t.

“And he himself had lots to say. So they do need to fill the vacuum with what should be being said now, because they built him up, and lots of it has to do with his charisma, and lots of it to do with the perceived talent that’s going to take him to the level and all the star power that goes with it.

“He needs to fill the vacuum by saying, ‘I’m going to fight this guy again, and I’m going to correct what you people are thinking.’”
