Celta Vigo vs Real Madrid predictions

Real Madrid have not yet been able to build up a full head of steam at the start of the 2024/25 campaign.

By their own sky-high standards, things started pretty badly for los Blancos, who drew two of their first three games in La Liga.

Carlo Ancelotti publicly admitted his team lacked balance in the first few weeks of the campaign, as the experienced Italian tried to find a way to fit Kylian Mbappe into his team.

A run of four consecutive wins followed, but Madrid had their wings clipped by Atletico Madrid in last month’s derby, with Diego Simeone’s side notching a last-gasp equaliser.

There was also a 1-0 defeat by Lille in the Champions League. That result will almost certainly have no long-term consequence for Madrid’s defence of their continental crown, but it was a setback nonetheless.

Across both La Liga and the Champions League, clubs like Lille, Real Mallorca and Las Palmas have taken points off Madrid so far. That is something Celta Vigo will use for inspiration ahead of their imminent tussle with the club from the capital.

Yet while Madrid have not blown away all-comers up to now, it is important to avoid going overboard with the criticism.

The Blancos have been accused of not yet having a defined style of play, but when have they ever? Madrid’s philosophy is to win trophies. Both throughout and prior to Ancelotti’s tenure, they have claimed silverware while playing football in different ways. That is a strength of theirs.

Moreover, the underlying numbers make for broadly positive reading. Only Barcelona are outperforming Madrid when it comes to expected goals difference, which measures the quality of chances a team creates and gives up.

Madrid are still unbeaten and they are now just three points adrift of their arch-rivals Barca, against whom they will pit their wits next weekend.

Before then, Ancelotti’s team must take care of business against Celta. Their upcoming opponents have made a decent start to the campaign (more on which below), but Madrid cannot afford to be dropping too many more points in fixtures like this.

Celta Vigo vs Real Madrid betting tips

Real Madrid are strong favourites to get the better of Celta Vigo in Saturday’s La Liga clash.

Real Madrid to win

Celta Vigo have seldom finished in the top half of La Liga in recent years, but that is where they find themselves ahead of Real Madrid’s visit to Estadio de Balaídos on Friday.

Victories over Alaves, Valencia, Real Valladolid and Las Palmas have helped Celta into ninth place, with just two points separating them from Osasuna in fifth.

Before anyone in Vigo starts planning their ideal European itineraries for 2025/26, it is worth remembering that Celta have only finished in the top 10 once since 2016.

They are likely to be brought back down to earth with a thud by Madrid, who will seek to get a handsome win under their belt ahead of the upcoming Clasico.

For all that Celta have had their moments in the opening few weeks, they are not a match for the reigning European and Spanish champions.

Both teams to score

In six of Celta Vigo’s eight matches in La Liga, both teams have found the back of the net. We anticipate that trend continuing when they face Real Madrid.

Celta have demonstrated that they know where the goal is in the first couple of months of 2024/25.

Only Barcelona, Madrid and Villarreal have made the net ripple more often, while Atletico Madrid are the only team to have kept a clean sheet against Celta.

For all the talk of the team’s star-studded attack, it is not at all easy to prise open Madrid’s backline.

Yet with the home fans in Vigo behind them, Celta have a decent shot at managing it here. Goals at both ends is the way to go.

Kylian Mbappe to score first

Despite recovering from injury in time to start Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Villarreal earlier this month, Mbappe did not join up with the France squad for the October internationals.

Ancelotti must have been delighted. Mbappe should be relatively fresh for Saturday’s showdown with Celta Vigo, as the former Paris Saint-Germain attack aims to really kick on in his new surroundings.

For all that he has not exactly blown the rest of the league away yet, no one in a Madrid shirt has scored more goals than Mbappe in La Liga this term.

The Frenchman no doubt feels he still has something to prove, though, and he will be aiming to make a fast start to the game this weekend.

Do not be surprised if Mbappe gets his name on the scoresheet before anyone else.
