Tottenham Hotspur vs West Ham United predictions

From ecstasy to agony. Immediately prior to the international break, Tottenham Hotspur were cruising at half-time of their clash with Brighton & Hove Albion.

Spurs played some lovely football in those first 45 minutes at the Amex Stadium, when goals from Brennan Johnson and James Maddison gave them a 2-0 lead.

Yet the north Londoners left the south coast empty-handed. The concession of three goals in the second period left Ange Postecoglou bemoaning his “worst” defeat since joining Tottenham.

In the circumstances, the Australian would have loved to be able to send his team back out there a few days later in a bid to right those wrongs. Instead, the manager was left to stew for a fortnight as his players jetted off across the world for the October internationals.

It has been a mixed start to the season for Spurs, as the Premier League table indicates. They sit ninth heading into the weekend having won three and lost three of their first seven matches.

There have been some high points, most notably the 4-0 thrashing of Everton and the 3-0 triumph over Manchester United at Old Trafford. But Tottenham still look fragile and that could count against them in what looks set to be a hugely competitive race for the top four.

Postecoglou must take some of the blame for that. When Spurs are in full flow, they are a joy to watch. But opponents do not seem to mind facing them. Tottenham always give you a chance.

West Ham United will therefore head across the capital believing they can get something on Saturday. That is good news for the neutrals, who should be treated to an entertaining encounter as gameweek eight begins at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham Hotspur vs West Ham United betting tips

Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United are both looking to kick on after mixed starts to the season.

Tottenham to win and both teams to score

This might not be the fiercest rivalry in London, but there is certainly no love lost between Tottenham and West Ham. In fact, this is probably the Hammers’ principal grudge match in the Premier League.

Happily, their supporters have enjoyed some memorable days and nights against Spurs in recent years.

Indeed, in their last eight meetings between these adversaries, there have been three wins for West Ham and only two for Tottenham.

On this occasion, though, we expect Spurs to pull through. West Ham were much better in their last game before the international pause, a 4-1 victory over Ipswich Town, but they still lack cohesion under Julen Lopetegui.

With the attacking players they have to call upon, West Ham should be able to score against this open Tottenham team. Avoiding defeat will be more difficult.

Go for a Tottenham win and both teams to score at 8/5 with Parimatch

Over 3.5 goals

Tottenham’s seven games so far this season have featured 22 goals, while West Ham’s have contained 21.

That is less than an average of 3.5 per match for both teams, but there are reasons to back at least four strikes here.

Tottenham, for better or worse, give opposing sides a chance. As we saw against Brighton, there is no question of Postecoglou shutting up shop when his team are ahead.

As for West Ham, they lost their defensive solidity in David Moyes’ final season at the helm and Lopetegui has not yet been able to get it back.

The Hammers rank in the bottom half for expected goals against and a lowly 14th for shots conceded.

There should be chances galore in the early kick-off on Saturday.

Choose over 3.5 goals at 20/21 with Parimatch

Brennan Johnson to score any time

What a run Johnson is on.

In finding the back of the net against Brighton last time out, the Wales international became the first Tottenham player since Harry Kane to score in six consecutive matches.

It is fair to say that not many people saw this coming. Johnson had his moments last term following his move from Nottingham Forest, but he only scored five goals in all competitions – a tally he has already bettered in 2024/25.

Johnson has discovered a sense of calmness in front of goal. His movement is bright too, and he frequently gets into dangerous positions at the back post when the ball is on the opposite flank.

West Ham are still searching for the right defensive combinations. If there is any uncertainty in their backline at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Johnson can take full advantage.

Tip Brennan Johnson to score any time at 11/10 with Parimatch
