Manchester United vs Brentford predictions

Shortly before 3pm on Saturday, Thomas Frank will take his place in the away dugout at Old Trafford. But could he be occupying the home one later this season?

For now, Erik ten Hag remains Manchester United manager. Despite overseeing the club’s worst ever start to a Premier League season, the Dutchman has earned yet another stay of execution.

Some thought the United hierarchy would use the October international break to relieve Ten Hag of his duties and bring in a replacement ahead of this clash with Brentford.

But after handing Ten Hag a new deal just a few months back, United have created a rod for their own back. A 0-0 draw with Aston Villa before the pause for Nations League fixtures seems to have been sufficient for the manager to cling on.

Yet it is increasingly difficult to see a long-term future at Old Trafford for Ten Hag. The Dutchman, as you would expect, defends himself by pointing to the two trophies he has added to the cabinet since his appointment in 2022.

That fact cannot be disputed, but United have gone backwards since Ten Hag’s debut campaign at the helm and they are further away than ever from winning a first Premier League title of the post-Alex Ferguson era.

That is not entirely Ten Hag’s fault, yet it is inarguable that the manager is not getting the best out of the resources at his disposal. Two wins in seven games has left United 14th in the table, three places and two points behind a Brentford side with a fraction of their budget.

And so to Frank. The Dane continues to work wonders at the Gtech Community Stadium. Brentford lost their former talisman Ivan Toney over the summer, yet they have not skipped a beat so far this term.

If there is a vacancy at Old Trafford sooner rather than later, Frank’s name is sure to be on the shortlist. A win on Saturday would do his chances no harm.

Manchester United vs Brentford betting tips

Manchester United badly need a win, but might Brentford spring a surprise at Old Trafford?

Brentford or draw

Not that Frank will be thinking about the Manchester United job on Saturday – and nor should he be.

A victory here could lift Brentford into the top eight depending on other results. Even though we are still early in the season, that would be a fine achievement given many anticipated a post-Toney comedown in the red-and-white section of west London.

While we are not convinced they will emerge triumphant, Brentford have a good chance of avoiding defeat against a United team that is struggling in virtually every part of the pitch.

The Red Devils have scored only five goals so far, with Southampton the only team in the division faring worse in attack.

Their defensive numbers are better in terms of goals conceded, but United have given up the joint-seventh most chances according to expected goals.

Brentford are a canny side and they will make life difficult for United. The Old Trafford crowd could get on the home team’s backs which would further play into the hands of their opponents.

Go for a Brentford win or a draw at 5/4 with talkSPORT BET

Brentford to score first

Brentford are the Premier League’s fastest starters. Remarkably, they have scored within 75 seconds of kick-off in each of their last four top-flight matches.

It is a sensational record. Brentford attack from the first whistle and treat the kick-off as a set-piece. Their strategy has paid off spectacularly.

Of course, other teams will now be aware of what Frank’s charges are looking to do, but that does not necessarily mean they will be able to stop it.

Manchester United, for their part, are too often slow out of the blocks. At Old Trafford last term, they conceded the first goal in 11 out of 19 matches. Only relegated duo Burnley and Sheffield United had worse records.

Tip Brentford to score first at 7/4 with talkSPORT BET

Bryan Mbeumo to score any time

Bryan Mbeumo has been a key player for Brentford ever since he joined the club in the Championship, but until this season he has in effect played second fiddle to Toney.

It was always going to be interesting to see how Mbeumo would react to becoming Brentford’s main man in attack this term.

The answer is so far, so good. Mbeumo has hit the ground running in 2024/25 and sits behind only Erling Haaland in the scoring charts after seven rounds of fixtures.

Ten Hag has not yet settled on a favoured centre-back partnership. It looked set to be Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt, but the United boss went with Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans in that 0-0 draw with Aston Villa.

Brentford will be able to create opportunities no matter who starts in the heart of the United backline.
