Hull vs Sunderland predictions

It seems to be one step forward and two back for Hull City this season.

The Tigers went into the international break sitting 13th in the Championship with 12 points from nine matches.

At the start of the season, a place in the playoffs would have been the aim. But so far, it has been an inconsistent start for new head coach Tim Walter’s team with three wins, three draws and three defeats.

The fixture list hasn’t been kind to the Tigers who have had to face Leeds United (away) and Sheffield United (home) in successive fixtures.

Not surprisingly, Hull picked up no points from those two tough fixtures. But they seemed to be the catalyst for a run of good form as the Tigers won their next three matches to pull away from the bottom end of the table.

Furthermore, Hull started scoring, with ten goals in three matches – this, after just two goals in their opening five fixtures.

But just when Hull City fans dared to believe again, their hopes came crashing down with a 4-0 defeat away to Norwich in the final match before the latest international break.

Further adding to the discontent on the terraces was the announcement on Thursday that executive vice-chairman Tan Kesler is to leave the club.

The fans were already surprised by the club’s decision to sack Liam Rosenior in the summer after he led them to 7th in the table last season.

This latest development is yet another change that is likely to leave fans scratching their heads wondering what is going on behind the scenes at the club.

Another football club that knows how to put their fans through the wringer is Sunderland.

But for the first time in many years, the Black Cats are doing very well. They have 19 points from nine matches and sat top of the table as the league paused for the latest round of international fixtures.

New head coach Regis Le Bris has revitalised the team and has them playing attacking football and scoring plenty of goals. The Black Cats are the top scorers in the division, having found the back of the net 18 times.

Their most recent match was a 2-2 home draw with Leeds United. The Black Cats did ride their luck and also needed a helping hand, or lack of hands, from United keeper Illan Meslier, who inexplicably conceded a freak late equaliser in the seventh minute of stoppage time to hand the hosts a point.

Up until that moment, it looked like Sunderland were going to fall to their third defeat of the season, and second in three matches after a 2-1 defeat away to Watford two matches prior.

Turning points like that can have a massive effect on confidence and lead fans to believe that this could finally be their year.

Hull vs Sunderland betting tips

The bookmakers have all three outcomes odds against, suggesting this is a match that could go either way.

Although it is very early in the season, this fixture could be vitally important to which direction Hull’s season is set to go in.

Win, and the Tigers are back on track after their 4-0 loss to Norwich. It would almost make the loss look like a freak result.

But lose, and they are almost back to square one. It would make it two defeats in a row, and four against teams that are set to be competing for automatic promotion and the playoffs. Teams Hull expect to be competing with.

Below we have named our alternative betting tips on the match:

Both teams to score and Sunderland to win

Sunderland is in a good place at the moment.

Somehow the Black Cats avoided defeat against Leeds. And although they were lucky with their stoppage time equaliser, most neutral observers would have to admit they just about deserved to claim a point from the match.

We do believe that Hull City will improve this season. And we also expect Sunderland’s level to drop off at some point. But at the moment, there is no sign of the fortunes of the two teams flip-flopping.

The Tigers are good for a goal at home against a Sunderland team that isn’t watertight at the back. But the Black Cats seem to be finding ways to win matches at the moment.

Both teams to score and Sunderland to win at 3/1 with Sky Bet

Sunderland to score over 2+ goals

Sunderland are averaging two goals a game in the Championship this season.

On the road they’ve scored twice at Cardiff, three times at Portsmouth, twice at Plymouth, and once at Watford.

The Black Cats have an effective game plan on the road. And although Hull don’t concede bucket loads at home, they are vulnerable against the top sides.

Sunderland are one of the top sides in the Championship, And along with Hull conceding in nine of their ten matches in all competitions this season, we can see them having enough chances to find the net at least twice.

Choose Sunderland to score 2+ goals at 11/10 with Sky Bet

Aaron Connolly to score any time

Sunderland picked up free agent Aarron Connolly in September and he is in line to make his debut this weekend.

In a stroke of irony, the Tigers released Connolly at the end of last season, leaving the 24-year-old Irishman without a club.

Football has a habit of throwing up these sorts of ironies. Wouldn’t it be just like Connolly to come back to the MKM Stadium and bite the hand that used to feed him.

This is one of those wagers that has you kicking yourself after it wins for not placing it in the first place. It’s a long shot, and it’s not based on form or statistics. Basically, it’s a speculative bet.

But at odds of 5/2 to find the net at any time, we say it is worth a small risk.
