Arsenal vs Shakhtar Donetsk predictions

For the first time in any competition this season, Arsenal suffered defeat on Saturday. A 2-0 loss to Bournemouth may have been unexpected but, on the balance of play at the Vitality Stadium, it was a fair result.

The game turned on a moment in the first half when William Saliba was adjudged to have denied Bournemouth a clear goalscoring opportunity by the video assistant referee.

The France international was sent off, leaving Arsenal to play the majority of the match with 10 men. Goals from Ryan Christie and Justin Kluivert in the second half meant they headed back to London empty-handed.

It was the first time since the turn of the year that Arsenal have lost an away game in the Premier League. Given how relentless Manchester City are, the Gunners may end up looking back on the loss to Bournemouth with regret at the end of the campaign.

The objective now is to bounce back immediately. Thankfully, a home game against Shakhtar Donetsk looks like one of Arsenal’s more straightforward assignments in the Champions League.

Arsenal have four points to their name so far. They kicked off their continental campaign with a dull 0-0 draw with Atalanta, before a confident 2-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain on the first day of the month.

Because they have been knocking on the door in the Premier League for the last two seasons, most Arsenal fans would prefer to win the title than the Champions League this term.

Yet it is notable that the north Londoners have never triumphed in Europe’s foremost club competition. The likes of Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa have been more successful in the European Cup than Arsenal, despite the latter’s significant success domestically.

This current team may not have won a trophy yet (few players remain from Mikel Arteta’s FA Cup winners of 2020) but they deserve to be among the leading contenders to go all the way in the Champions League.

A relative lack of European knockout experience could ultimately be their undoing, but no one will relish facing Arsenal at any stage of the tournament.

That is the case for Shakhtar Donetsk, who will arrive at the Emirates Stadium more in hope than expectation.

Arsenal vs Shakhtar Donetsk betting tips

The Champions League is back and Arsenal will be targeting maximum points when they host Shakhtar Donetsk.

Arsenal to win both halves

Shakhtar Donetsk have been playing outside their home city for more than a decade now, but Russia’s latest invasion of Ukraine has forced them outside their own country for their home games in the Champions League.

Needless to say, that has not aided their chances of advancing beyond the league phase, for which a top-24 finish is required.

Shakhtar drew 0-0 with Bologna on matchday one, before going down to a 3-0 defeat by Atalanta in their second game. This could be a similarly one-sided encounter in their opponents’ favour.

Arsenal are defensively strong, so if they keep a clean sheet here they would only need to score one goal per half for this bet to pay out.

Tip Arsenal to win both halves at 5/6 with bet365

Arsenal -2.5 Asian handicap

Shakhtar Donetsk won the Ukrainian title last season, as they have done on numerous occasions in recent times. But dominating their domestic league does not mean they are able to match Europe’s elite.

Arsenal will be looking to make amends for the loss to Bournemouth. Indeed, Saturday’s result was probably the worst possible outcome for Shakhtar since Arteta’s men will be extra determined to register a convincing victory.

The Gunners were completely in control in their aforementioned 2-0 triumph over PSG on matchday two.

Given Shakhtar do not have the same talent at their disposal as the Parisians, a similar showing from the hosts on Tuesday should allow Arsenal to win by at least three goals.

Select an Arsenal win with a -2.5 Asian handicap at 23/25 with bet365

Gabriel Martinelli to score any time

Due to a calf injury he contracted during the international break, Gabriel Martinelli only featured for just over a quarter of the Bournemouth game.

He was right at the heart of the action straight after entering the fray, putting in a wicked cross with his first meaningful action and then spurning a golden opportunity to put Arsenal 1-0 up.

Martinelli is likely to return to the starting XI here and the Brazilian will be keen to find the back of the net for the third time in Arsenal’s last four matches at the Emirates.

Martinelli was below par for much of last season but there have been a few signs in 2024/25 that he might be about to recapture his best form.

Against a Shakhtar Donetsk team that are huge underdogs for Tuesday’s clash, Martinelli has the quality to make an impact.

Choose Gabriel Martinelli to score any time at 5/4 with bet365
