Rangers will be desperate to get back to winning ways on Thursday night after their Scottish Premiership title aspirations took another big hit on the weekend with an unexpected 1-0 defeat to Kilmarnock.
Biggest title contenders and main rivals Celtic had already dropped points the day before, leaving the door open for Philippe Clement’s side to close the gap to three points on their Old Firm rivals, though as it turned it out it was Celtic who extended their lead to six points across the weekend.
The Glasgow side remain third in the table, six points behind both Celtic and Aberdeen in their bid for a first league title in four years, and with two defeats in their last three games, will be eager to get back to winning ways on the European stage on Thursday night.
Rangers started the season in the Champions League qualifying rounds but a third round defeat to Dynamo Kyiv saw their transfer to the Europa League, where they kicked off the league phase with an impressive 2-0 win over Malmo in Sweden.
A fortnight later, the Gers were well beaten in a 4-1 defeat at home to Lyon, leaving them with three points from their opening two games, though will be fancying themselves to add three more points to their tally on Thursday as they bid to pull clear of the 17th place position they currently occupy.
FCSB, formerly known as Steaua Bucharest and European champions of 1986, make the trip to Glasgow on the back of a five match winning streak, with three clean sheets in their last four games.
Ilias Charalampous’ side head into Thursday’s match unbeaten in their last nine matches, with seven wins in that time, which has seen them climb out of the depths of Romanian top flight, having been 15th out of 16 at the start of the run, and now find themselves fifth and just a couple of points off the top two, with a game in hand.
The side from the Romanian capital are one of just five teams, including European heavyweights, Anderlecht, Lazio, Lyon and Tottenham have have won both of their opening two Europa League league phase games.
The Ros-albastrii, who were crowned champions of Romania for the first time in nine years last season, sealed a 4-1 win over Latvian side RFS at home in their opening game, before securing a hard-earned and impressive 1-0 away win over Greek champions PAOK.
Rangers will be relishing the chance to get to play back in front of their home fans under the lights on a European occasion on Thursday night and will see it as the perfect opportunity to bounce back after Sunday’s defeat to Kilmarnock.
FCSB will be in confident mood ahead of their trip to Glasgow but the Ibrox faithful combined with Rangers’ individual quality should be enough for the home side to secure a relatively comfortable 3-1 victory.
