Lille supporters enjoyed one of the club’s greatest ever nights on matchday two of the Champions League – and Atletico Madrid fans were no doubt cheering along with them.
Even with Kylian Mbappe only fit enough for a place on the bench, Real Madrid were widely expected to make light work of Lille earlier this month.
However, a Jonathan David penalty on the stroke of half-time was the only goal of the game, allowing the French outfit to register a famous 1-0 triumph over the reigning kings of the continent.
It was a disappointing night for Madrid, but they are still well positioned to qualify directly for the round of 16 by finishing in the top eight of the 36-team table in the revamped league phase.
As for Lille, they may ultimately look back on that victory over Madrid not just as a memorable night in isolation, but one which helped them achieve their own objective in the Champions League.
A top-eight finish will almost certainly be beyond Lille, but they will feel they are capable of ending the league phase between ninth and 24th, thus qualifying for the knockout phase play-offs.
They went down 2-0 to Sporting CP on matchday one and now face a tricky trip to Atletico Madrid, but they will look at games against the likes of Bologna, Sturm Graz and Feyenoord as winnable.
Atletico also have three points to their name heading into matchday three. A last-minute winner saw them past RB Leipzig in their first outing of the campaign, before Diego Simeone’s side were humbled in a 4-0 loss to Benfica in round two.
Not for the first time, it looks like Atletico’s home form will be key to their chances of a successful season in the Champions League. The Colchoneros are invariably a tough nut to crack when playing in front of their own fans, but they have tended to be less reliable on the road in Europe for a while now.
That is why this match is so important for Atletico, who face a tricky test at Paris Saint-Germain in their next Champions League assignment. Simeone will see three points as a must here.
