Manchester City vs Sparta Prague predictions

Come the end of the season, Manchester City may look back on the weekend just gone as a pivotal one in the Premier League title race.

Arsenal, presumed to be City’s biggest rivals for the prize once again this term, slipped to a 2-0 loss to Bournemouth on Saturday.

It looked like Pep Guardiola’s side were also going to drop points a day later, only for a John Stones header in second-half stoppage time to earn them a 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It is credit to Guardiola and the influence of the senior players within his squad that City’s appetite for league titles has not dulled despite winning six of the last seven.

City have nothing left to prove in England’s top flight, yet they still manage to maintain their sky-high standards season in, season out.

They may not be top of the table right now – that position is held by Liverpool – but City are justifiably the favourites to claim the prize once again this season.

Would that be enough, though? Guardiola is now in his ninth campaign at the Etihad Stadium but he has still only won one Champions League with his current employers.

Of course, it is not easy to triumph in Europe’s biggest competition. And only Carlo Ancelotti has won the competition more often as a manager than Guardiola.

Yet given the resources and talent at his disposal, the man himself might be disappointed if he left City having only been crowned a European champion on one occasion.

As has been the case for some time now, City are once again the favourites with the bookies to go all the way this season.

After being held to a 0-0 draw by Inter on matchday one, they picked up their first win of the continental campaign by thrashing Slovan Bratislava 4-0 at the beginning of the month.

Attention now turns to the visit of Sparta Prague on Wednesday, with tougher tests against the likes of Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain on the horizon.

Manchester City vs Sparta Prague betting tips

Manchester City are strong favourites to get the better of Sparta Prague in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Manchester City to win both halves

Not many teams in the competition wanted to draw Manchester City in the league phase, but Sparta Prague may have been reasonably content to be chosen as one of their opponents.

This season is the first one back in the Champions League proper for Sparta since 2005/06. The Czechia outfit will therefore appreciate their chance to pit their wits against some of Europe’s best, a category in which City patently belong.

Sparta, who began their journey way back in the second qualifying round against Shamrock Rovers, have exceeded expectations so far.

They beat Red Bull Salzburg 3-0 first time out, before battling to a 1-1 draw with Stuttgart in their most recent European outing.

Needless to say, they face a much more difficult challenge on Wednesday. In front of their own fans at the Etihad, City should be able to triumph in both halves.

Go for Manchester City to win both halves at 8/11 with bet365

Manchester City over 3.5 goals

No visiting team has won at the Etihad in any competition for almost two years now. Brentford were the last opposing victors way back on 12 November 2022.

Real Madrid did celebrate at Manchester City’s home last season, but their penalty shoot-out success does not count as an overall victory in the record books.

The Etihad is not necessarily a fortress in terms of atmosphere, but it is nonetheless incredibly difficult to beat City on their own patch.

That is in part because Guardiola’s side tend to be in full control of the games they contest on familiar territory. It is also because it is notoriously tough to outscore such a fantastic attacking side in front of their supporters.

Given the riches at Guardiola’s disposal, especially at the top end of the pitch, it is worth a punt on the hosts making the net bulge four times or more.

Tip Manchester City to score over 3.5 goals at 5/4 with bet365

Phil Foden to score any time

Phil Foden has had a stop-start opening to the season and he was back on the bench for the 2-1 victory over Wolves last time out.

The England international entered the fray in the second half and went on to set up Stones’ winner.

That could be enough for him to earn a recall to the starting XI to face Sparta Prague, not least because Kevin De Bruyne is still sidelined through injury.

Foden will be determined to take full advantage of his opportunity if he does indeed feature from the first whistle.

Do not be surprised to see his name on the scoresheet at some point.
