Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is a gentleman who cherishes wildlife conservation to the brim.

During his three-day official visit to Uganda, the 70-year-old German nationality reserved some time to visit the Uganda Wildlife Education Center (UWEC), arguably, Africa’s largest zoo.

He had a guided tour at the animal sanctuary where he had a great inter-face with a number of animals as Mountain Gorillas, Giraffe, Elephant, White Rhinos, Lions, Tiger and the cats.

“This is good” the 1976 Olympic gold medalist in Fencing sighed as he feed the Giraffe.

He also had good moments with the Rhinos, mountain gorillas and the Lion.

“It is breathe-taking to see these animals, play with them and we need to preserve them” Bach added.

At UWEC, he also planted a unique tree species called Warburgia ugandensis. (Mukuzannume) that is a highly medicinal plant.

Bach was hosted to a cocktail at Speke Resort Munyonyo by the Athletes’ commission where former and current Olympians were invited for a friendly interface before dinner was served.

He held fruitful meetings with the Prime Minister Rt Hon. Robinah Nabbanja and was entertained by young players under the Game Connect project at the YES Center in Nsambya, a suburb of Kampala city.

Bach and his entourage visited Entebbe State House where he made a bold promise to help in the construction of an Olympic Center and a modern swimming pool, provided land is provided.

Bach and his visitors were then treated to a send-off dinner at Sheraton Kampala Hotel where the Government Chief whip Hon. Hamson Obua was chief guest.

He departed Uganda on Thursday, 24th October 2024 for Kenya where he will complete the African tour.

Bach also visited Senegal, South Africa and Lesotho on this historic African tour.
