There is a stat that is so rare, most people don’t even know the name of it or that it even exists.
It is arguably the rarest statistical accomplishments in NBA history, with only four officially on the record, and the last one coming over 30 years ago, in 1994.
The Admiral was the last player to record a quadruple-double, all the way back on February 17, 1994San Antonio Spurs
That would be the quadruple-double.
The last player who accomplished such a feat, was The Admiral himself.
San Antonio’s David Robinson recorded 34 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 blocks on February 17, 1994 in a win over the Detroit Pistons.
It may feel like Groundhog Day, because there is another generational big man residing down by the Alamo who is primed to break the NBA’s 30-year quadruple-double drought.
Victor Wembanyama is heading into his second season, coming off a historic rookie campaign, the likes of which hadn’t been seen before, and is looking to take the next leap into the upper-stratosphere of the NBA’s elite.
The 20-year-old alien is close, and may already be there.
Consider this, last season Wembanyama recorded a 27-point, 14-rebound, 10-block triple-double in Toronto.
He isn’t even old enough to drink, and he is already the safest bet to record the NBA’s next quadruple-double.
In an exclusive with talkSPORT, Stefan Bondy, New York Knicks beat writer for The New York Post, and a reporter who has seen a lot of basketball, heaped praise on the one-of-a-kind talent in San Antonio.
“I don’t think anybody’s ever seen anybody with that size do the kind of things that he’s doing,” Bondy said.
Wemby is looking to become the first player to record a quadruple-double in over 30 yearsGetty
Wembanyama has all the tools and talent to follow in Robinson’s footsteps and create history, but there is one thing that Bondy notes, that could derail everything.
“My big thing with him is injuries,” Bondy said.
“I’m always worried when somebody’s that big and doing the kind of basketball motions that he’s doing and being aggressive as he was aggressive last season. I’m worried that he’ll get injured.”
However, if Wembanyama is able to stay healthy, Bondy believes there is no limit on the kid.
“If he stays healthy, he’s on a trajectory that I don’t think we’ve ever seen before.
“And it’s hard to really say where this is going because I don’t know, what’s the limit?
“I don’t know because we have not seen a player that size do the things that he’s doing.”
That’s the thing with Wembanyama, there is no limit.
Not the sky, not the stars, not the moon…
All eyes will be on the Spurs this season and what the tall lanky Frenchman has for an encore, and if his limitless talent starts to lead to wins.
Time will tell, but it’s a safe bet that Wembanyama will get everything turned around sooner rather than later.
While maybe messing around and recording a quadruple-double in the process.
