Race to Zero Campaign: Uganda Olympic Committee conducts climate action workshop

The Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) under the Sustainability in Sport Commission organized a climate action and sports for nature framework workshop at Nob View Hotel in Ntinda.

This three-day’s workshop will rhyme along the theme “Race to Zero campaign”.

According to the UOC Sustainability in sport commission chairperson McBond Assimwe, this workshop is intended to raise awareness of how athletes ought to cope up with the climate change effects.

“The UNFCC sports for climate action and IUCN sports for nature framework workshop is organized under the theme ‘Race to Zero Campaign’. This is meant to raise awareness of how athletes can cope up with climate change. We are humbled for the support from the Olympic Solidarity that has funded this programe” Assimwe told the media.

The well attended workshop has representation from over 50 sports associations and federations in Uganda with about 100 participants including officials, athletes and representatives from the National Forestry Authority (NFA), Tree-O, Plan VIVO Foundation among other eco-related agencies.

Mechanisms as tree planting, use of renewable energy and plastic recycling are being preached to the participants.

The workshop commenced on Friday, 25th October 2025 with a session by Peter Mugisha, a member of the UOC Sustainability in Sport Commission and a key note speech by Adrine Kirabo of Plan VIVO Foundation.

There was a plenary session for understanding climate change and its effects on the sports community moderated by Assimwe with the discussants including Regina Lunyolo Okoit (member, UOC Sustainability in sports commission) and Cissy Byabaraire Musiime (archery coach).

The opening day ended with group discussions intended to compile resolutions derived from the opinions of the different people.

Packed programe:

The second day (Saturday, 26th October 2024) will have the presentation of the GHG Inventory in the sports subsector with draft resolutions implementations and action plan on climate change (Carbon foot prints).

There will also be discussions on the responsibility of the sports movement in contributing to GHG and curb their carbon footprints.

Among the day’s presenters will be Joseph Collins Ssemanda (director sports consult Africa), Kenneth Opedun (member, UOC sustainability in sport commission), Moses Egaru (country representative, IUCN Uganda), Brandon Katura (member, UOC Culture and Education commission), Lunyolo.

This highly interactive workshop will climax on Sunday, 27th October 2024 with dialogue session about the role of sports organizations (national sport federations, clubs, national teams compensating their carbon footprints), role of sports authorities and presentations of case studies.

The participants will then receive certificates of participation for their effort.
