Werder Bremen vs Bayer Leverkusen predictions

It’s been a strange season for Ole Werner and his Werder Bremen team. Impressive wins on the road have been somewhat upstaged by disappointing home defeats.

Despite this, Werder still sits eighth in the Bundesliga table with 11 points from seven matches. They have won three, drawn two, and lost two.

The two defeats were against Bayern Munich (5-0) and Frieburg (1-0), both coming at home. They were also held to a 0-0 draw at the Weserstadion by Dortmund, where they haven’t won in the Bundesliga yet this season.

On the road it has been a different story. The Green-Whites have won three and drawn one. Wins have come against Mainz (2-1), Hoffenheim (4-3), and most recently Wolfsburg (4-2). The draw was against Augsburg (2-2) on matchweek 1.

It has to be said that the fixture list hasn’t been kind to Werder. Two of their opening three home games were against teams in the top four of the Bundesliga, and the other against Dortmund, who may well end up in the Champions League places at the end of the season.

And their fourth home match is against Leverkusen, so things aren’t getting any easier.

Ironically, Werder can go level on points with opponents Leverkusen if they defeat them on Saturday. But when you look at how well Xabi Alonso’s team has started the season, that outcome looks very unlikely.

Leverkusen sits fourth in the Bundesliga on 14 points. They have won four, drawn two and lost one.

You may be thinking that’s not as good as last season, and you would be correct.

But you have to take into account that last season’s form was a one off that will never be repeated. And if manager Xabi Alonso is going to be judged against that standard for the rest of his career, then the rest of his career is going to be a failure.

In realistic terms, Leverkusen have done exceptionally well negotiating a tough run of Bundesliga matches alongside the opening weeks of the Champions League.

In recent weeks they have held Bayern to a 1-1 draw in Munich, defeated high-flying Frankfurt 2-1, and picked up seven points in their opening three Champions League matches.

The only blot on their copybook was a 2-2 home Bundesliga draw with lowly Holstein Kiel on matchweek 6. Alonso’s team dominated the match. They enjoyed 75% possession and had 23 shots on goal. Their biggest fault (said with irony) was going into a 2-0 lead within 8 minutes.

In all seriousness, that 2-2 draw did highlight one glaringly obvious difference between last season’s Leverkusen and this. Last season Leverkusen were watertight at the back (they conceded just 24 goals in 34 matches). They have already conceded 13 times in seven matches this season.

But like we said, Alonso’s team is still going well. They are just three points off the top of the Bundesliga and in a good position to pick up another 3 points on Saturday.

In team news, Jen Stage, Marco Grull and Niklas Stark are missing for Werder, and Leverkusen are without Amine Adil.

Werder Bremen vs Bayer Leverkusen betting tips

The horrible run of home matches has made it difficult to judge Werder. Most Bundesliga teams will have struggled with such a run of matches, but one thing it has proven is that the Green-Whites struggle against the top teams.

We expect that theme to continue when they take on Leverkusen on Saturday. Below we have named our betting tips on the match:

Leverkusen to win and both teams to score

Leverkusen leak goals at the back and Werder Bremen can’t win at home. The match looks made for both teams to score and Leverkusen to win.

Xabi Alonso’s team has conceded in every Bundesliga game this season. Okay, that run will end one day. But probably not in this fixture.

Nevertheless, when it comes to runs ending, Werder is yet to score at home this season. Against a leaky Leverkusen backline, that should change on Saturday.

The statistics may point to Werder drawing a blank. But Leverkusen’s defensive record contradicts that and makes both teams to score more likely to happen. And at 6/4, it’s surely worth the risk!

Back Leverkusen to win and both teams to score at 6/4 with SBK

Over 3.5 goals

If both teams score as expected, there should be plenty of goals in the match.

There were six scored in Werder’s 4-2 win at Wolfsburg last weekend and if they adopt a similar approach against Leverkusen, we can easily see four or more goals this weekend.

Furthermore, four or more goals have been scored in five of Leverkusen’s seven Bundesliga matches this season. Only in the top of the table clashes with Bayern and Frankfurt was the total not reached.

Back over 3.5 goals at 1/1 with SBK

Florian Wirtz to score any time

Florian Wirtz has been in good form for Leverkusen this season.

Already he has four goals in seven Bundesliga matches, and he also has three in three in the Champions League, including his team’s goal against Brest on Wednesday.

The attacking midfielder had a rest in the 2-1 win over Frankfurt. He came off the bench in the 64th minute to help his team to a win. He should start on Saturday with Amine Adli out injured until next year.

Choose Florian Wirtz to score any time at 8/5 with SBK
