The official UFC rankings have been updated and there are some strange changes.

This follows UFC 308 in Abu Dhabi on Saturday as Ilia Topuria retained his bantamweight title when he became the first person to knock out Max Holloway.

Topuria’s victory – on top of his Alexander Volkanovski KO in similar fashion – cemented his position as one of the UFC’s greatest fighters in the current roster in the eyes of numerous MMA fans.

However, the newly updated rankings don’t seem to agree.

Topuria remains fourth in the UFC men’s pound-for-pound list with Islam Makhachev, Alex Pereira and Jon Jones all ahead of him.

Jones has fought once in the UFC since his victory over Dominick Reyes at UFC 247 in February 2020.

He submitted Ciryl Gane to claim the heavyweight belt for the first time in March 2023 after a three-year hiatus.

In that same time period, Topuria has made his debut for Dana White’s promotion, went on an eight-fight win streak and claimed the featherweight title – all the while knocking out two of the UFC’s most established fighters.

MMA fans were quick to react to the updated rankings.

One took to X and said: “The fact Jon Jones has only beat one person this decade and it was for a vacant title…Dricus [Du Plessis] should be higher than him.”

A second added: “Ridiculous. He [Topuria] chinned Max Holloway.”

While a third commented: “Ilia is definitely P4P number two, no disrespect to Alex Pereira.”

And a fourth said: “That’s criminal.”

Topuria hasn’t made his thoughts known on the rankings yet, but did call out White on Monday for not giving him more than a $50,000 bonus following his UFC 308 display.

UFC President White called members of the media ‘morons’ in an explosive social media rant in October, due to their history of voting in the rankings.

The ranking system was introduced in February 2013 to give fans a chance to clearly identify the best fighters in the UFC’s roster that consists of over 700 fighters.

Media members collectively vote on who should be included in the top 15 fighters for each weight class, as well as the pound-for-pound rankings to compare fighters regardless of their weight division.

The rest of the updated pound-for-pound rankings consists of all other current UFC champions, as well as the likes of Leon Edwards, Sean O’Malley and Sean Strickland.

Three changes were made to the P4P rankings after UFC 308 as Holloway, due to his defeat to Topuria, traded spots with Alexandra Pantoja and Israel Adesanya was introduced back into the top 15.

He replaced Brazil’s Charles Oliveira, who lost via split-decision to Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 300 in April, in 15th spot.

Adesanya has tasted defeat in his last two octagon appearances, so it was strange to see ‘The Last Stylebender’ propelled back among the UFC’s elite.

Khamzat Chimaev skyrocketed ten places in the UFC middleweight rankings after his ruthless submission victory over Robert Whittaker on Saturday.

And fellow middleweight Shara Magomedov, who produced an outrageous double spinning backfist on the same card to knock out Armen Petrosyan, was introduced to the 185lb rankings for the first time.

He rose above Michel Pereira, who was beaten by Anthony Hernandez in their UFC Fight Night main event on October 19.
