Manchester United vs Leicester City predictions

The axe has finally fallen on Erik ten Hag. Following a 2-1 defeat by West Ham United at the weekend, Manchester United relieved Ten Hag of his duties on Monday.

The irony is that United did not perform too badly at the London Stadium. They were completely dominant in the first half but just could not finish their chances.

Even when West Ham fought their way back into the game after the break, they needed a controversially awarded penalty in second-half stoppage time to condemn United to defeat.

Yet even though the Red Devils were unfortunate in east London, Ten Hag cannot argue he was not given a fair crack of the whip.

It remains surprising that the Old Trafford hierarchy did not bite the bullet in the summer. United finished eighth in the Premier League last term, their worst finish in the division post-1992. In some ways they were lucky to avoid dropping into the bottom half.

Victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final essentially saved Ten Hag, who was handed a new contract a few weeks later. That has proved to be an expensive mistake in two different ways.

The first is financial. Reports state that United will have to pay Ten Hag £16m in compensation. The second is more important. By keeping hold of Ten Hag for the first three months of 2024/25, United are now playing catch-up in the race for Champions League qualification.

That objective is on hold for now as United, led by Ruud van Nistelrooy on an interim basis, prepare to welcome Leicester City to Manchester in the fourth round of the EFL Cup.

Given his standing among the fan base, Van Nistelrooy has a good chance of landing the permanent job if things go well over the next few weeks.

Needless to say, the Premier League is the arena in which the judgement of Van Nistelrooy will be made, but the Dutchman will be desperate to win his first game in charge on Wednesday. A place in the quarter-finals awaits the winner at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Manchester United vs Leicester City betting tips

Manchester United could do with a win in the EFL Cup after their struggles in other tournaments.

Manchester United to win to nil

Leicester City have bigger fish to fry than the EFL Cup this season. Their fans, you feel, would not be too disappointed to lose this tie.

Indeed, everyone associated with the club would accept a defeat here in exchange for a victory over Ipswich Town this weekend.

With that crunch clash looming on the horizon, Steve Cooper will almost certainly name a weakened side for the trip to Old Trafford.

That will make Manchester United’s task easier. The Red Devils have not looked completely comfortable defensively this term, but their main problem has been at the other end of the field.

A win and a clean sheet on Wednesday would represent the perfect start for Van Nistelrooy.

Tip Manchester United to win to nil at 5/4 with bet365

Manchester United to score in both halves

Manchester United were profligate in front of goal against West Ham last time out, but that was not the first time we have seen that shortcoming cost them.

Remarkably, only Crystal Palace and Southampton have scored fewer goals than United so far this term.

The Red Devils have made the net bulge just eight times in the Premier League despite racking up a cumulative xG of 14.6, a tally bettered by only Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Brentford.

If United continue creating opportunities at their current rate, they will almost certainly start scoring more goals soon.

In fact, an uptick in that regard could begin against a rotated Leicester team in midweek, not least because only Southampton and Ipswich have given up more xG than the Foxes so far.

Joshua Zirkzee to score any time

Joshua Zirkzee has not had an easy start to life at Old Trafford following his move from Bologna over the summer.

He recently lost his place in the starting XI to Rasmus Hojlund, although Zirkzee was involved in Manchester United’s equaliser against West Ham on Sunday after entering the fray as a second-half substitute.

With Hojlund now the first-choice centre-forward in the Premier League, Zirkzee should get an opportunity from the start against Leicester.

He will be desperate to take it. It is far too early to write the Dutchman off despite his slow start. A goal or two here would do his confidence the world of good.
