‘Not the best prep’ – Former Open Champion demands dramatic change to ‘polar opposite’ LIV Golf calendar

Cam Smith has called for a change to the LIV Golf schedule that would make players better prepared for the majors.

Having won the 2022 Open at St Andrews, the former World No.2 quickly pledged his allegiances to the LIV circuit.

He finished tied for 33rd at the 2023 event at Royal Liverpool and missed the cut entirely this year at Royal Troon.

Smith was not the only LIV Golf player who struggled.

Jon Rahm was the only established LIV name to finish inside the top 10 in Scotland this year, and that disappointment has been blamed on the schedule.

LIV Golf players were unable to get the necessary links preparation for the 152nd Open due to the Valderrama event taking place the week before.

The Spanish venue offers a much-different test to the colder, windier and firmer conditions at Royal Troon.

“It was really two polar opposites of golf,” Smith said, detailing the differences between Valderrama and The Open.

“It was really hot [at Valderrama], the ball was going a long way up in altitude.

“And then getting on to links [at Royal Troon] where it’s quite cold and windy, it’s probably not the best prep.”

In contrast, eventual winner Xander Schauffele spent his build-up to the championship playing on the harsher links at the Scottish Open held at The Renaissance Club on the links terrain of the Scottish coast.

Following his disappointment this year, and ahead of his return to action in Australia this week, Smith suggested LIV Golf players are lobbying for a links stop before Open week.

“It’s definitely something that we spoke about. They are well aware of that,” he said.

“I don’t know if it’ll happen next year, but definitely in the future it’s something that we want to do.”

Smith’s wish echoes that of Rahm, who confirmed back in July that he has been pushing for the same thing.

“There’s so much that goes into adjusting to links golf,” the Spaniard said.

“Getting used to the greens and the ball reacting on the ground. I didn’t think about it until after, but it’s undeniable how much it helps to play a links golf course the week before the Open.

“Obviously, LIV management have contracts in place with some venues and plans in the future.

Jon Rahm recorded a top 10 finish at this year’s Open but also believes a links course would benefit the LIV Golf circuitGetty

“It’s not as easy as it sounds to just say, ‘Well, let’s do this.’ It would be something I would like to talk to other players about because that way, there’s strength in numbers.

“I think a lot of people might agree with it.”
