Spurs were the biggest stories from the evening as they knocked out regular Premier League winners City 2-1 as Pep Guardiola’s side failed to come back from early Timo Werner and Pape Matar Sarr goals.
Their quarter-final opponents, Manchester United, also saw victory in their first game since Erik ten Hag’s firing as interim Ruud van Nistelrooy recorded a 5-2 win.
Meanwhile, holders Liverpool defeated Brighton 3-2, Chelsea lost 2-0 to Newcastle and Arsenal breezed past Championship outfit Preston 3-0.
There was an upset of sorts as Crystal Palace also overcame high-flyers Aston Villa 2-1 away at Villa Park.
However, that match and Spurs’ clash also saw some bad news for the victors, with two key players picking up worrying injuries.
Spurs’ Micky van de Ven and Palace’s Eberechi Eze both had to be substituted off and now the London sides will be sweating on their fitness.
