Southampton v Everton predictions
Southampton head into the weekend off the back of a rare win having having booked their place in the quarter finals of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night with a narrow 3-2 win over Championship side Stoke.
Russell Martin’s side return to league matters on Saturday though, a competition in which the Saints are yet to earn their first victory of the season, leaving them bottom of the Premier League table with just one point from their nine matches so far.
Performances have been on the up in recent weeks though, going 2-0 up in their last home league game against Leicester before ultimately losing, and gaining plaudits in a 1-0 defeat away at four-time defending champions Manchester City last weekend.
Tuesday night’s cup win ended a run of four straight defeats and the south coast side will see Saturday’s game against Everton as the perfect opportunity to keep the winning momentum going in a bid to earn their long-awaited first win of the league season and lift themselves off the bottom of the table.
Everton make the trip to the Hampshire coast unbeaten in their last five matches, recovering well from a lethargic start to the campaign which saw them lose their opening four league games and get knocked out of the Carabao Cup by none other than Saturday’s opponents.
Sean Dyche’s side’s recent of form has seen the Toffees lift themselves off the bottom of the table to where they now sit, in 16th place, five points clear of the drop zone and just three points off the top half in what is a very tightly congested league table.
The Merseyside club picked up their first away win of the season in their last game on the road, a 2-0 win over newly promoted Ipswich, and will be expecting a similar result against another side who were playing their football in the Championship last season.
Two contrasting styles will go head to head at St Mary’s on Saturday, with Southampton desperate for their first win of the season while Everton will be eager to keep their unbeaten run going, leaving a stalemate possibly the most likely outcome. 1-1.
Southampton v Everton betting tips
Cameron Archer has scored two goals in Southampton’s last three Premier League matches to shoot him to the top of the club’s goal scoring charts this season following his move from Aston Villa in the summer.
Neither side have been particularly stringent regarding their defence this season, which suggests goals will be scored on the weekend, and with the Saints improving week on week, they will see Saturday’s game as a huge opportunity to add to their points tally.
