Bayern Munich are top of the Bundesliga heading into gameweek nine, yet the jury is still out on their new manager Vincent Kompany.
That is in part because of his record before he arrived at the Allianz Arena. In Kompany’s previous job, he was relegated from the Premier League with Burnley after his side spent the entire 2023/24 season in the bottom three.
There is no doubt that Kompany was fortunate to get the job. By all accounts Bayern only turned to the Belgian after their attempts to bring in the likes of Julian Nagelsmann, Xabi Alonso, Roger Schmidt, Hansi Flick, Ralf Rangnick and Oliver Glasner had failed.
Bayern always look to appoint a German-speaking head coach where possible, so Kompany’s proficiency in the language helped his cause immensely.
In some ways, Kompany has done a good job so far. His team have scored 29 goals in their first eight fixtures, setting a new Bundesliga record in the process.
Kompany has overseen some handsome victories in the German top flight, including a 6-1 thrashing of Holstein Kiel, a 4-0 thumping of Stuttgart, and 5-0 demolitions of both Werder Bremen and Bochum.
Yet Bayern have fared less well in the Champions League. In fact, they are already up against it in their bid to finish in the top eight and thus qualify automatically for the round of 16.
Bayern started well with a stunning 9-2 triumph over Dinamo Zagreb. However, they were beaten 1-0 by Aston Villa on matchday two before going down 4-1 to Barcelona last time out.
The fact that Bayern did not win the Bundesliga last term should help Kompany. Winning the title but falling short in the Champions League would probably be acceptable this season.
However, unless they can start performing in the biggest games, Kompany’s team are in danger of becoming known as flat-track bullies. That is a tag that no team wants.
Union Berlin are no pushovers, but a win here would not quieten all the doubts over Bayern and their manager. Still, a victory is a must for the Bundesliga leaders.

Union Berlin were one of the stories of the European season in 2022/23 when they finished fourth in the Bundesliga under Urs Fischer.
Last term was more of a struggle for the club from the capital, however. Fischer departed around this time last year, before Union staggered to a 15th-place finish.
The early signs this season are that they have recovered. Ahead of their trip to the Allianz Arena, Union sit fourth in the Bundesliga standings.

Yet although they have only lost one game so far – a slender 1-0 defeat by Borussia Monchengladbach – Union, now led by Bo Svensson, will struggle to deny Bayern Munich victory this weekend.

Bayern Munich have always scored plenty of goals in the Bundesliga, but they have taken things to another level under Kompany so far.
An average of 3.63 goals per game is a phenomenal rate given we are almost a quarter of the way through the 2024/25 campaign.
Bayern have made the net bulge over 3.5 times in half of their eight games – and that is before we even consider the goals they have conceded.
Union Berlin have the second-best defensive record in the division up to now, with their backline having been breached on just five occasions.

In his first 11 outings across the Bundesliga and the Champions League, Kane has made the net bulge 14 times. That includes three matches in which Kane has scored a brace or more.
