Two sides with just one defeat each in all competitions so far this season go head to head in what is probably the standout fixture of tonight’s Champions League action.
Liverpool have lost just one of their 15 matches in all competitions this season, winning 13 of those, including 10 of their last 11 as they prepare for the visit of the reigning German champions to Anfield tonight.
Arne Slot, who had the daunting task of replacing Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager in the summer, his hit the ground running on his move to Merseyside, with the Reds’ 2-1 win over Brighton on Saturday afternoon taking them to the top of the Premier League table.
The six-time champions of Europe are win of just two teams, along with Aston Villa, to have won all three of their Champions League matches so far this season, with victories over AC Milan, Bologna and Leipzig.

The latter of those three are the only team to have defeated Bayer Leverkusen in any competition this season, and are the only side to have beaten Die Werkself in a domestic match since May 2023, having gone the entire domestic season unbeaten in all competitions last season, winning the league and cup double.
Xabi Alonso, who won the Champions League as a player with Liverpool, was the bookies’ favourite to take over at Anfield following the news of Klopp’s departure, but opted to stay at Leverkusen, having just delivered the club’s first ever league title, and second ever DFB Pokal victory.
The Bundesliga champions have lost just one game all season up to this point but are drawing a lot more games than they were in the last campaign, which currently leaves them fourth in the table following their goalless draw with Stuttgart on Sunday night.
Alonso’s side have drawn five of their last eight matches in all competitions, including three of their last four, which sees them seven points off the current pace set by Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga table.
Leverkusen also lost their 100% Champions League record this season having won their opening two matches against Feyenoord and AC Milan, being held to a 1-1 draw in France against Brest a fortnight ago.
Liverpool have won three of the four matches they’ve played against Bayer Leverkusen in their history, the most recent meeting coming in the Round of 16 of this competition in 2005, with the Reds winning each leg 3-1 en route to lifting the trophy for the fifth time.
