Stuttgart vs Atalanta predictions

You cannot help but marvel at the job Gian Piero Gasperini has done at Atalanta.

When the Italian took charge in 2016, la Dea had finished 17th and 13th in their last two Serie A seasons.

Under the tutelage of Gasperini, Atalanta have since finished third three times and fourth on two occasions.

They have reached three Coppas Italia finals, participated in the Champions League quarter-finals and, just a few months back, lifted the Europa League trophy after beating previously unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen convincingly in the final.

As if all that were not enough, Atalanta’s success has come alongside an attractive and innovative brand of football. They have consistently been one of the most interesting and entertaining teams to watch in Europe’s top five leagues.

Time and time again, Gasperini has had to rebuild his squad after some of his best players were plucked away by bigger clubs.

That was the case once again after the 3-0 defeat of Leverkusen in Dublin, which came as a surprise to everyone but those who have watched Atalanta regularly over the last eight years.

Aleksei Miranchuk and Teun Koopmeiners, who made 42 and 51 appearances respectively in 2023/24, were among those who sought pastures new over the summer.

It took Atalanta a few weeks to adjust, but they are really beginning to motor now. They have won five matches in a row in Serie A, the latest of which was a stunning 3-0 away victory over league leaders Napoli.

Atalanta are unbeaten in the Champions League after a win and two draws, which means they have lost only one of their last 16 European encounters – and that was a meaningless 1-0 defeat by Liverpool after they had won the first leg 3-0.

Stuttgart have also been punching above their weight of late, albeit over a much shorter timeframe than Atalanta. They finished second in the Bundesliga last term and held Bayer Leverkusen to a 0-0 draw at the weekend.

Stuttgart have four points to their name so far, so the winner of Wednesday’s meeting will end matchday four above the loser in the new Champions League table.

Stuttgart vs Atalanta betting tips

Stuttgart and Atalanta will battle it out as the Champions League resumes with matchday four.

Atalanta to win

Atalanta have some serious momentum behind them.

Their five-game winning run in Serie A in general and the 3-0 defeat of Napoli in particular will have given the players a huge amount of confidence, as will their unbeaten start in the Champions League.

One of the best things about Gasperini’s team is that they play their usual game no matter the occasion. There is no chance of Atalanta seeking to shut up shop at the MHPArena.

Stuttgart have had a mixed start to the campaign. They thrashed Borussia Dortmund 5-1 and won 1-0 at Juventus in their last European contest.

But they have generally been inconsistent and only one of their last five Bundesliga matches has yielded a victory. Atalanta are the likelier winners here.

⚽ Back Atalanta to win at 7/4 with Midnite ⚽

Over 3.5 goals

Stuttgart turned in a dogged defensive display to hold Bayer Leverkusen to a 0-0 draw in their most recent outing.

In many ways it was an uncharacteristic performance from Sebastian Hoeness’ men, who kept their first Bundesliga clean sheet at the eighth attempt.

Stuttgart have one of the most productive attacks in Germany but one of the leakiest defences. Their eight league games have contained a total of 33 goals – an average of 4.13 per 90 minutes.

Meanwhile Atalanta’s 11 encounters in Serie A have produced 43 goals – an average of 3.9 goals per game. No one in Italy has made the net bulge more often.

In other words, this one is unlikely to finish 0-0. Both Stuttgart and Atalanta will go for it, which is good news for any neutral tuning in.

⚽ Tip over 3.5 goals at 11/10 with Midnite ⚽

Mateo Retegui to score any time

What a start to life at Atalanta Mateo Retegui has had.

The Argentina-born Italy international moved to his current employers from Genoa over the summer, and he has wasted little time in making his mark for Gasperini’s charges.

Retegui is the top scorer in Serie A at present having beaten opposition goalkeepers 11 times in 11 games.

The only disappointment for the former Boca Juniors man so far is that he has yet to open his account in the Champions League.

This is an excellent chance to do so. Atalanta have been creating chances for fun of late and Stuttgart, as we have established above, are not the most defensively watertight team on the continent.

The in-form Retegui can score his first ever goal in European competition on Wednesday night.
