Sheffield United v Sheffield Wednesday predictions

Sheffield United head into Sunday’s Steel City derby as odds on favourites for victory over their biggest rivals, and take a three match winning streak into the contest, having shot into automatic promotion places in midweek with a dramatic victory over Bristol City.

Chris Wilder’s men were a goal down with just just four minutes to play against a Bristol City side unbeaten at home in the league all season, but managed to turn the tie around and score a 98th minute winner to take them into the Championship’s top two.

The Blades were the only side in the top five not to drop points in the midweek round of second tier matches, which now leaves them just two points off the top of the table as they seek an instant return to the Premier League following last season’s relegation.

Sheffield United head into the weekend and the Steel City derby with the joint-best home record in the division, having picked up 16 points from a possible 18 so far this season on their own patch, and have won five games on the spin at home.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday got back to winning ways on Tuesday night with an impressive 2-0 victory over Norwich, which saw them climb into 15th place, leaving them just four points off the play-offs in an incredibly tightly congested Championship table.

Danny Rohl, who will be managing in his first Steel City derby on Sunday, had won just one of their previous five games in all competitions, but will make the short trip across Sheffield in confident mood following Tuesday’s win.

Despite only goal difference separating them from the top half of the table, the Owls are also just three points from the relegation zone, but having won each of their last two away games in the league, the visitors will back themselves to return home with a positive result.

The last three Steel City derbies have all ended goalless, albeit the most recent of which coming five years ago, but United’s dramatic win in midweek could be season defining moment and they’ll be determined to push on for promotion from here on in – I predict a 2-0 Blades win.

Sheffield United v Sheffield Wednesday betting tips

Gustavo Hamer leads Sheffield United’s goal scoring charts this season with four to his name, mostly from left midfield, and has a history of scoring in big games at this level having scored both of Coventry’s play-off goals on their run to the final last year.

Only Burnley have conceded fewer goals in the Championship this season than Sheffield United, who have let just seven goals in in 14 league games, and have kept clean sheets in each of their last five matches at Bramall Lane.
