He beat Italy’s Constantino Rocca by four shots having finished level on six under par through 72 holes.

Daly secured £125,000 in prize money with his victory, the second major win of his career.

The American previously won the PGA Championship as the ninth alternate in 1991.

Almost three decades on from lifting the Claret Jug, it has now been put up for auction.

Listed on Golden Age Auctions, the trophy comes with a display case and a letter of authenticity from Daly.

The lot description reads: “Offered here is an official Claret Jug made for John Daly for his historic victory at the 1995 Open Championship at St Andrews.

“This player’s trophy is sterling silver (hallmarked), and measures 12 1/4″ tall. The magnificent case measures 14 1/4″ x 8 1/2”, and is embossed with the R&A logo on its silk-lined interior.

“Our consignor purchased this trophy directly from John Daly in 2015, and this trophy comes with a signed letter of authenticity and provenance from John Daly himself.”

The auction started at $500 (£388) but has since skyrocketed after 60 bids from prospective buyers.

With over six-and-a-half days remaining, the current highest bid stands at $86,062 (£66,806).

Potential suitors have until 2am (GMT) on November 18 to submit their bids before the auction closes.

It is not the first time an historic piece of golf memorabilia has been auctioned for an eye-watering amount.

Back in March 2022, the clubs Tiger Woods used from 2000 to 2001 were bought for £3.96million.

Woods won nine events in 2000 alone, including three Majors at the US Open, Open Championship and PGA Championship.
