Match Day 6: ICC Challenge League B

Match Result: Uganda v Italy

  • Uganda 254/9
  • Italy 230 all out
  • Uganda won by 24 runs

Next Game: Uganda v Bahrain

Venue: Entebbe Cricket Oval

Cricket Cranes were on the ropes at 115/0 against the Italians in their fourth game of the first round of the Challenge League B tournament at Entebbe Oval.

Italy was nearly halfway through the run chase until Henry Ssenyondo (4/28) took a catch off his own bowling to remove Emilio Nico Gay (50) and that was just the moment Uganda needed to claim a gritty result.

In the top of the table clash, Uganda won the toss and elected to bat first. Uganda was slow out of the blocks and lost Robinson Obuya (11) early. However, the returning Raghav Dhawan (48) and Shrideep Mangela steadied the ship before both marched in quick succession.

Skipper Riazat Ali Shah (57) and Dinesh Nakrani (59) put on 97 for the 5th wicket partnership that added initiative in the run scoring for the Cricket Cranes.

Uganda finished on 254/9 in their 50 overs after a very slow start with Ali Shah continuing his good run of form with the bat with his second half-century of the tournament.

In the run chase, Italy put down the gauntlet and raced quickly to 115 with both openers Emilio Nico Gay (50) and Joe Burns (82)  bringing up their half centuries. Gay was the first wicket to fall and that was the opening Uganda needed. The slow bowling options of Henry Ssenyondo (4/28) and Alpesh Ramjani (5/69) induced a collapse that derailed Italy’s chase.

Uganda was the unlikely winner, especially with the way the Italians were batting which is a true test of character for Cricket Cranes who were able to dig deep and pick up a great result.

The win takes Uganda to the top of the table of the first round of the Challenge League and will be taking on Bahrain in their final game on Saturday at the same ground.
