Italy v France predictions
Both teams head into Sunday night’s Nations League A2 finale having already booked their places in March’s quarter final, with Italy leading the group by three points currently as they seek a seeded spot in the last eight draw, which will see them come up against a runner up from a different League A group.
After a disappointing Euro 2024 campaign in which they won just one of their four games and suffered an early exit at the hands of Switzerland, Luciano Spalletti’s side have surprised many by dropping just two points from their five Nations League matches so far.
Italy came from a goal down to win 3-1 in Paris in the opening match of the current Nations League campaign, upsetting the odds to and setting the platform for a highly promising tournament so far, which leaves them in a very strong place to finish top of the group.
A draw, or even a one-goal defeat would be enough on Sunday night to book themselves a seeded place in the Nations League quarter finals, and will be looking to got at least one better than their bronze medal finishes in each of the last two Nations League campaigns.
France, like Italy, have already qualified for the quarter finals of this edition of the Nations League, their goalless draw with Israel on Thursday night, combined with Belgium’s defeat against Italy giving them the point they needed to book a place in the last eight.
Didier Deschamps’ side, though, face an uphill battle to earn a seeded spot in the quarter finals, and their inferior head to head record against the Italians leaves them needing to win by at least two goals in Milan to finish top of the group.
France do have fond memories of playing at the San Siro in the Nations League, having come from behind in the final of the 2021 edition to win against Spain and lift the trophy for the first time in just the second edition of its existence.
Les Bleus had won three matches on the trot following their surprise defeat at home against Italy in September, before being held to a 0-0 draw by Israel on Thursday night, and will be looking to get back to winning ways on Sunday to give them what should be the easier route to the semi finals.
France had won their last three games against Italy prior to their defeat in Paris a couple of months ago, though the French haven’t won a competitive game against their neighbours since the group stage of the 2006 World Cup, though interesting are unbeaten against Italy in Italy since 1962.
France make the trip to Milan as very marginal favourites, though with Italy’s confidence through the roof after a very strong Nations League campaign so far, while France are fresh off being held to a draw at home by Israel, I’m predicting a 2-1 home win.
