Everton Women vs Liverpool Women predictions

Local bragging rights will be on the line on Sunday afternoon, as Merseyside rivals Everton and Liverpool get ready to lock horns in the Women’s Super League.

After finishing fourth last season, Liverpool began the current campaign with the objective of closing the gap to the so-called big three of Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal.

That remains the aim and we are still only seven games into 2024/25, but it has been a mixed start overall for Matt Beard’s side.

Liverpool head into the weekend in sixth spot in the standings having won two, drawn three and lost two so far.

Their latest defeat was not unexpected, as Chelsea ran out 3-0 winners in St Helens last weekend.

Liverpool pushed Manchester City much closer, suffering only a 2-1 defeat when those two teams met last month. The Reds led 1-0 in that game, but a Bunny Shaw brace (including a winner in second-half stoppage time) turned it around for City.

More frustrating than that pair of losses to the top two were draws in matches Liverpool really ought to have won.

Their meetings with Leicester City, West Ham United and Crystal Palace all ended 1-1. Had Liverpool won just two of those encounters, they would be level on points with Brighton & Hove Albion in third place right now.

Home form has been an issue – Liverpool are yet to win a game in front of their own fans this term – so Beard may not be too bothered that the derby is taking place at Goodison Park.

“Form goes out of the window in these games,” the manager said in the build-up. “We’ve just got to make sure that we outrun them and outfight them. We know we’ve got the quality in our team to hurt them.”

Everton are rooted to the foot of the WSL table at the time of writing, but they will draw confidence from what is a decent record against their cross-city neighbours. The Toffees have won 10 games to Liverpool’s nine, with seven draws so far.

Liverpool will be looking to inflict more pain on relegation-threatened Everton this weekend.

Liverpool/Liverpool half-time/full-time

Everton are still winless after seven games but all will be forgiven if they emerge triumphant against Liverpool.

The Toffees finished sixth in 2022/23 and eighth last term, but they are in real danger of being involved in a protracted relegation battle this time around.

Having overseen three draws and four defeats so far, manager Brian Sorensen is under pressure to lead Everton up the table.

Unfortunately, this could be another tough afternoon for the team from the blue half of the city.

Liverpool have won their last two away games and they were in the lead at half-time in both. We anticipate the same outcome at Goodison Park.

⚽ Back Liverpool/Liverpool in the half-time/full-time market at 13/8 with bet365 ⚽

Liverpool to win to nil

Even though they finished 17 points clear of the drop zone last season (in part because Bristol City were not cut out for the top flight), Everton were among the WSL’s lowest scorers.

Sorensen’s side made the net ripple only 24 times in 22 games. That was just four more than Bristol City, who collected only six points on their way down to the Championship.

Everton have been even less effective in the opposition penalty area this time around, mustering a pitiful two goals in their first seven outings. What is more, one of those was an own goal.

There is plenty of room for defensive improvement as far as Liverpool are concerned. Beard’s women are yet to keep a clean sheet in any competition in 2024/25.

This is a good chance for them to register their first. Everton will be up for it in front of their own supporters, but their attack has been anaemic to date.

⚽ Tip Liverpool to win to nil at 2/1 with bet365 ⚽

Olivia Smith to score any time

Liverpool have spread the goals around in the first few weeks of the season.

No member of Beard’s squad has more than two to her name thus far. Cornelia Kapocs, Olivia Smith, Taylor Hinds and Marie Hobinger have each found the back of the net twice, while Sophie Roman Haug has chipped in with one strike.

Smith is probably the most astute choice in the anytime scorer market for the clash with Everton this weekend.

The Canada international is in her first season in England following a move from Sporting CP in the summer.

Smith scored 16 goals in all competitions last term and it is surely only a matter of time before she catches fire with the Reds.
