The 26th Kinyara Golf open officially teed off on Thursday, 21st November 2024 at the par-71 golf course in Masindi with the gross and professional golfers in action.
Grace Kasango established a two-shot lead with a 1-under-70 score after the opening round of 18 holes for the professionals.
The towering pro registered a total of 4 birdies; two apiece on the front and back nine with 12 pars, a bogie and double bogie.
Kasango opened his round with two successive pars on holes par-4 hole 1 and par-3 hole 2 with the first birdie coming on par-5 hole 3.
He double boggied on the par-4 hole 4 and recovered with his second birdie on the morning on par-4 hole 5.
Kasango then drove with four pars in a line on 6, 7, 8 and 9 to finish the front course level on 36.
He then embarked on the final 9 holes with a par on 10, birdie on 11, pars on 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 before scratching 17 and finished strongly with a birdie on hole 18.
“It was a good round apart from the rains that halted our play for about two hours to kill off the momentum after hole 6” Kasango who won the pro section of the same tournament in 2022 disclosed to Kawowo Sports.
“I lost a ball on hole four but recovered well to play on. I expect a far better round on Friday (round two)” Kasango added.
Two golfers are tied in second position on 1-over-72; Saidi Mawa and Samuel Kato.
Ronald “Ronnie King” Bukenya and Joseph Mawejje are jointly tied in fourth with 2-over-73.
They are followed by Emmanuel Ogwang and Herman Mutawe (76 apiece) with Fred Nkuranga, Tom Jingo, Adolf Muhumuza, Brian Mwesigwa and Peter Ssendaula all returning 6-over-77 in 18 holes.
The second and final round will be played on Friday, 22nd November 2024 with all the professionals fighting tooth and nail to make the cut for the total Ug.Shs 10,000,000 kitty in the bag.
Meanwhile, home bred top amateur Joseph Kasozi is in the lead of the amateurs with 107 gross in 17 holes.
Playing off handicap two, Kasozi’s first 18 holes registered 2-over-73 and completed the front 9 of the second round with 34 gross marks.
Ivan Sekulima is second with 113, one shot better than the duo of Abdullah Kakooza and Christopher Basaliza.
The tournament is organized by Kinyara Sugar Limited and is supported by Liaison Group, ICEA Lion Insurance, Gold Star Insurance Company Limited, UAP Old Mutual, Sanlam Insurance and MUA.
