The Uganda women handball national team (Nile Queens) traveled to the 26th Africa senior’s nations cup tournament in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The team of 14 players and 7 officials left Entebbe International Airport on the morning of Monday, November 25, 2024.
The development comes since 1979, over 4 decades when the team last featured on the continental showdown.




This team has been training at the Old Kampala Sports Arena for over a month under the coaches Jimmy Remmie Orotin (head coach), Azizi Yakub (assistant coach), Christopher Onen Owor (goalkeeper coach), Aidah Birungi (team physio) and Barnabas Amanya (doctor).
“We have trained well and ready for the challenge ahead of us. The players are mentally and physically set for the tournament. We thank the Uganda Handball Federation, NCS and others for the support” Yakoub states.
The team made the grade after a promising performance at the 13th African Games in Accra city, Ghana where Uganda finished 5th overall.
A bulk of the players who competed in Ghana are still part of the team led by the captain Shakirah Bako.
Other players on the team include Diana Tiperu, Jesca Nakamaanya, Lillian Achola, Diana Nakamya, Barbra Nantume, Hilda Abangit, Priscilla Aber, among others.


Uganda had competed at the Africa nations cup way back in 1974, 1976 and 1979.
This championship is organized by the African Handball Confederation (AHC) in conjunction with the handball federation of Democratic Republic of Congo.
Uganda is pooled in group B alongside the hosts Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Angola, Tunisia as well as two West Africans Guinea and Cameroon.
Pool A has Congo, Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, Cape Verde and Kenya.
The 2024 women’s seniors handball Africa Nations Cup is a qualifier to the 2025 world handball world cup.
