On Saturday, November 23, FUBA Women marked Uganda’s celebration of the Her World, Her Rules campaign in Rubanda District.

The girl-child-focused basketball camp dubbed Her World, Her Rules is FIBA’s most recognized women’s initiative stemming from the strategic objective to increase participation of women in the sport.

This year’s event was held at St. Agatha Girls School in Kakore, Rubanda District, in South Western Uganda, with the aim of introducing basketball skills to a target group of over 60 girls between the ages of 6-16 years and imparting the skills that will boost their confidence and empower them to challenge gender inequality in the community.

Silverbacks guard Tonny Drileba led the cast of coaches that also featured Albert Achiko, and National Basketball League stars like Maureen Amoding and Sarah Ageno.

Ruth Atuhaire, Grace Kusaba and Vincent Etyang were some of the other trainers on the day.

The day started with teams assembling before they were split into four to start the basketball skills session. The campers were taken through the basics of basketball, including passing, dribbling and shooting.

Later in the day, the students engaged in 3X3 games to implement what had been taught and some of the standout performers were rewarded.

The campers were also taken through other aspects of life, including talks about staying in school, menstrual hygiene, and first aid among others.

Racheal Ainamasiko, the Fuba Women’s Commissioner, closed the event by awarding certificates to all participants and giving out sports equipment.

“It was a wonderful day and the girls enjoyed themselves. I hope that this will be a big step as these schools seriously take up basketball,” Ainamasiko said.

Basketballs and gear, including sneakers and uniforms, are some of the rewards handed to participants to ensure continued involvement in the game.
